One Book, One School
This year the Covington School community is reading Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. All students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 received their own personal copy of the book.
Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood "wishtree"—people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red's branches. Along with her crow friend Bongo and other animals who seek refuge in Red's hollows, this "wishtree" watches over the neighborhood. You might say Red has seen it all. Until a new family moves in. Not everyone is welcoming, and Red's experiences as a wishtree are more important than ever. "Different languages, different food, different customs. That’s our neighborhood: wild and tangled and colorful. Like the best kind of garden," is how Red describes her home.
Reading the book together as a Covington community is meant to help facilitate a love of reading with students while also providing the entire family an opportunity to enjoy reading and sharing together. Each day a video has been shared with a Covington Staff member reading the assigned pages for the day. The latest information on eOne Book, One School, as well as the recordings of the Wishtree can be found in this Covington Newsletter.
Scale, space, and distance
Ms. Giovanazzi’s fifth grade students headed outside this week to more deeply understand how distance affects the size and measurement of items in space. Mrs. Paluch’s 3rd graders stopped to watch their older classmates test, check and refine some of their understanding. Experiences for students to manipulate materials in the world around them provides for a more deeper and active understanding of the content each student is consuming. via twitter.com/d123hannum

Letters from the Front Lines
8th grade OLHMS Social Studies students put themselves in the shoes of soldiers who fought during WWI. After examining primary source documents including actual letters from the trenches of WWI, students were asked to put themselves in the position of a soldier fighting during the 'Great War'. To more fully understand, while also building empathy for those involved in the war, student letters include descriptions of the conditions that detail the harsh realities of the conflict and how it affected those both 'in the trenches' and those back home. via twitter.com/d123olhms
