Blessed Sacrament Catholic School
From the Principal's Office
Dear Blessed Sacrament Families,
Greetings from Bulldog Country! I hope you and your family have been able to enjoy the first weeks of summer and are enjoying quality time with one another. The School Office is in the midst of closing out the school year and opening our 2023/2024 school year.
Throughout the summer, I will be updating this page with the following information listed below. This information will assist our families in preparing for our new school year.
Our Tentative 2023/2024 Instructional Calendar is now available for review and planning. School holidays and early dismissal dates are concrete, but I wanted to provide you with the year's overview so that families could plan. A final calendar will be sent home on the First Day of School with all students.
Finally, I hope your summer season is filled with prayer, excitement, and activities. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the School Office at (210) 824-3381. The School Office will remain open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We will be closed on Monday, July 3rd, and Tuesday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day. We will resume regular hours beginning Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
I pray the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph continue to watch your family.

WITH EVERY ACT OF LOVE
Growing up, I learned the meaning of the pidgin-style saying, “Monkey see, monkey do.” Adults would use that saying to explain how children would mimic the behaviors of others without fully understanding the behavior or possible consequences of that behavior.
Fast-forwarding to 2023, it seems like “Monkey see, monkey do” can still be used to characterize behaviors in our society that have been engulfed by technological advances, political tribalism, an I-centered focus, or the need for negative attention. A simple text message, social media post, ill choice of words, or unwillingness to comprise becomes the vehicle to further strain relationships or cause a flight or fight mentality.
Unfortunately, our children observe the words and actions of the adults around them and the whole “Monkey see, monkey do” circle continues. Children see the cruelness of others and how inflicted pain is celebrated by secular culture. Our children are absorbing these observations faster than previous generations and it calluses the hearts, lips, and minds of these impressionable and delicate gifts from God.
Imagine, for a moment, what our world would be like if our children could only witness the good that exists in our world. This “Monkey see, monkey do” mindset would have a drastic and influential impact on how children think, speak, and interact with others.
In the Gospel of St. John, we hear very clear instructions from Jesus. Jesus says, “This I command you: love your neighbor.” He doesn’t say I invite you to think about it. He doesn’t say maybe. He doesn’t say only the neighbors you like. He says, “Love your neighbor.”
As our Church has explained, “The Catholic school loses its purpose without constant reference to the Gospel and a frequent encounter with Christ.” As a Catholic School, we not only have the duty, but the responsibility to change the “Monkey see, monkey do” mentality to one where our community becomes inspired to love our neighbors fulfilling God’s sacred commandment.
Understanding this special responsibility, I have selected With Every Act of Love as our school’s spiritual theme for the 2023/2024 school year. While we may not change the culture outside of our faith community, we are charged by the Gospel to work towards fostering a Catholic school environment rooted in love. My prayer is that our students and community members using the “Monkey see, monkey do” mentality will then begin to slowly chip away at the ugly walls that have been created in our society.
I look forward to sharing with you in August how this paradigm shift will affect our school’s spiritual formation, academic programs, classroom management plans, disciplinary procedures, extracurricular activities, and community activities!
As we continue with our summer break, it is my prayer that you experience God’s grace and grow closer to the Blessed Sacrament With Every Act of Love!

SUMMER ACADEMIC PRACTICE AND HOMEWORK
Students can lose as much as one to two months of learning during the downtime of summer. All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities year-round. Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer (White, 1906; Heyns, 1978; Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al, 2004). Though summer vacation should be a time for leisure and fun that only summer can bring, we require our students to read and engage in math practice to counter potential academic regression.
Students entering Pre-Kindergarten 3 through Eighth Grade are strongly encouraged to complete their Summer Reading Practice and Summer Math Practice building on the successes of the past school year and planting the seeds for positive performance during the Fall Semester.
BACK TO SCHOOL SOCIAL AND OPEN HOUSE
Please accept our invitation to our Back-to-School Open House and Social on Friday, August 11, 2023. The Open House will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will provide parents and students the opportunity to meet their teacher(s) and drop off any school supplies alleviating heavy backpacks on the first day of school. Once you have dropped off supplies, you are invited to the Parish Hall for a social and fellowship. This will be a great opportunity to celebrate our Catholic Christian faith, gather and build community, and celebrate the beginning of another great school year while enjoying an end-of-summer treats and sweets.
SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTS
As in previous years, Faculty and Staff members have provided a list of school supplies needed for classrooms. If you have questions regarding a certain school supply list or are having difficulty finding an item, please contact the School Office at (210) 824-3381.
The School Office also receives donations during the summer months, so if you are in need of supplies, please contact Mrs. Martinez.
