Tech Tidbit: Pinterest

Perhaps less common than Twitter, Pinterest is a web and mobile application company that offers a visual discovery, collection, sharing, and storage tool. Users create and share the collections of visual bookmarks (boards). Boards are created through a user selecting an item, page, website, etc. and pinning it to an existing or newly created board.


For the library, I use Pinterest to organize board that share the new books each month. I also have a board dedicated to my readalike infographics, one for my newsletters, and one for book videos I make. You can see my boards here.


So how could you use this in the classroom? Well, as one teacher website said, "Pinterest is a great lesson in copyright and digital ownership. All photos, ideas, recipes and research comes from the hard work and creativity of another. It is too easy to scrape content and steal images from the Internet and use them as yours. When pinning images, always make sure you give credit to the original source. Pinning directly from the original source is the best way to ensure you are giving proper credit and a link back to the original work." (source)


Some other ideas include:



  • Have students photo journal on Pinterest. There are numerous ways students can use Pinterest to journal. How about a series of photos captioned in a foreign language? Or documenting a trip they took? The possibilities are endless.
  • Make group work visual. Whether you’re working with your colleagues or helping students to work on a group project, Pinterest can be a great place to collaborate. Share images for presentations or links to papers, resources, and research.
  • Have students pin project ideas. Pinterest can also be a great place to get students working. Teachers could have students pin ideas on a board that relate to a particular project they’ll be working on.
  • Use pinning as part of a lesson. Of course, pinning itself could also be an educational experience. Students could have to pin items that fit a certain set of criteria as part of a lesson.



Not to mention it would work great as a resource to get student research started. Share some good sources with them on a board! More ideas are available here (which is where I got the above ideas)!

Dirt Bikes, Drones, and Other Ways to Fly by Conrad Wesselhoff

Everyone deals with grief in different ways. 17-year-old Arlo deals with it through adrenaline rushes - either through daring dirt bike feats or intense drone video games. The US government catches wind of Arlo's expertise at flying video game drones and drafts him to fly real drones in the Middle East. As Arlo navigates the landscape of government missions and at home daredevil stunts, his family continues to attempt to find ways to deal with his mother's death. Great read for anyone who enjoys an adrenaline rush.

Divided We Fall by Trent Reedy

Daniel Wright, 17, fired the shot that set the course for the end of the United States. Not on purpose, mind you. As a member of the Idaho National Guard, being called up to maintain peace and order at a government protest should be routine. But the people are angry and as words and rocks fly, accidents happen. What starts as a single shot cascades into an armed conflict. Eerily possible and realistically written, Divided We Fall is an engrossing read. Adults will be nothing short of terrified by Reedy's story while teens will be drawn to the constant action and suspense.

Don't Look Bacy by Jennifer Armentrout

Sam and Cassie went out together, went missing, and only Sam came back. Unfortunately, Sam has no memory of what happened to her and Cassie in the woods or anything that came before. Now she's trying to piece back together what was apparently her "perfect" life before the tragedy struck, but she's finding it harder and harder to reconcile the person she was before and how she feels now, especially when it comes to her "before" boyfriend and the boy next door. And then there's the fact that someone doesn't want Sam to remember what happened in the woods...
