Illnesses and absences:
Please call Nurse Mudge if your child has any illness that requires an extended absence - otherwise please send in a note or email upon returning to school.
Elementary aged children can easily spread and pick up germs and viruses. If your child has developed symptoms or has been sent home from school with symptoms that are of a concern, such as Flu (seasonal or Covid ) Strep Throat or Hand Foot and Mouth aka HFM or Coxsackie virus--- which are all communicable illnesses -please contact your Pediatrician for advice and /or evaluation before returning to school. Please be mindful of illnesses/ coughing that are easily spread through respiratory droplet transmission.
Checklist for returning to school:
- must be symptom free / fever free - without the aid of any over the counter medications such as Acetaminophen ( Tylenol ) or Ibuprofen ( Motrin or Advil)
- slept well the night before ( fatigue or sleep deprivation may have a negative effect on your child's ability to successfully get through the day)
- eaten a healthy breakfast- being hungry can lead to stomach aches , headaches and fatigue
- well hydrated- dehydration can lead to headaches as well as contributing to illnesses
A Dr's note documenting illness and /or medical evaluation must be provided to school in order to medically excuse any absences.
Library News
This week in the Martinson Library....
*Our Kindergartners were smart detectives and tried to follow the clues to solve The Mystery of the Missing Mitten by Steven Kellogg.
*1st and 2nd graders read Thunder Boy by Yuro Morales. We enjoyed talking about our names and what our names might be if they reflected our talents and accomplishments.
*3rd graders continued reading Quinny and Hopper (Adriana Brad Schanen) and spent time comparing and contrasting the two main characters.
*4th graders continued reading Crenshaw (Katherine Applegate) and discussed the importance of asking for help (which can be difficult to do!).
*5th graders tried to figure out the lie in the nonfiction book, Two Truths and a Lie : It's Alive!. We read three nonfiction passages and had to guess which passage was the lie.
Wondering if the books your children want to read are age or grade appropriate? I like to use Common Sense Media to read parent and child reviews of books. The website assigns an age or grade level estimation for the book. It also breaks down content and measures things like violence, language, diverse representations, educational value, and positive role models. I find it very helpful when children start to read longer chapter books and I don't have time to read all of the books! Check it out at www.commonsensemedia.org and Happy Reading!
PTO NEWS
MES LIVE!
We are so excited to announce that our annual Talent Show is back on Friday 3/24 and will be
held at Marshfield High School! Sign-up sheets for acts will be going home this week as well
as an email from the PTO with more details. Get ready to see your name in lights!
Do you own a local business or know someone who does? MES LOVES LOCAL and we are actively seeking Boosterthon sponsors. Katie Cashman is doing the legwork for this effort; please reach out to her directly or contact us through ptomartinson@gmail.com to volunteer to help Katie or to become a sponsor!
Speaking of volunteering, we have urgent need for an Enrichment Coordinator for grades 3-5 for the remainder of the year. Many, many thanks to Allie Devaney for all the time and effort she has spent shaping this role and bringing amazing programming to our children! She has definitely set her replacement up for success!
