Friday Family Update
Week three at PRES was the best yet! Students are really beginning to master the routines and procedures of the school day. Lunch and recess routines are established and moving in a positive direction. Most of our buses are now arriving on time, and we are working with the bus company to remedy the buses with schedules that need revision. We are looking forward to a great weekend event: the PTSA 5K at DRRHS on Sunday! A few mystery staff members are participating in the dunk tank as volunteers to be dunked. We can't wait to see this! Good luck to all of the race-runners and the PTSA as they host their biggest fundraiser of the year!
If you should need help or support, please contact us by phone or email anytime. We are always happy to help. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kristine Kefor, Principal

This Month's Lunch Menu
Hello Palmer River Families and Friends!
This week, I am sharing some information for families on sleep wellness. Staying healthy is a challenge. There is much focus on exercise and eating choices. Another important pillar is sleep. Sleep affects our emotional well-being, immune system, behavior, ability to maintain a healthy weight, and our ability to learn.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, school children, ages six through twelve, are recommended to sleep nine to twelve hours a day. The suggestion for preschoolers is ten to thirteen hours respectively. Easier said than done with today’s busy lives.
Here are some tips to facilitate sleep for your family. Sleep hygiene is how many specialists refer to establishing as much of a routine in your home as possible. Bathing is important as it relaxes the mind and body. Reading a story, whether you read to your child, or your child reads to you is another example. Curtailing technology (television, phones, tablets) is essential as the blue light emitted from these devices blocks our bodies from producing melatonin. Harvard Health recommends doing so two to three hours before bedtime.
Melatonin is a hormone that regulates your sleep cycle. There are natural ways to bring about its production in the brain through light color. Amber colored lights have been shown to block blue light and may help to get you to rest earlier. Many “Smart Bulbs” have a color changing feature whereby you can select amber or a warm orange. Red is another important color for sleep. This could be useful in nightlights; this color has no effect on the circadian clock (NIOSH).
Establishing a sleep routine is trial and error. Find what works for you and share with others.
Happy ZZZZ’s
Sincerely,
Nurse Alyson Bellora BSN RN NCSN
