May 2025
Dear West Englewood families,
Spring is always a busy time of year at school! We have many celebrations to look forward to as our students continue to learn and grow. Please be sure to read through this month's newsletter for details on all of our school activities!
If you have a student who is preschool-aged, North Kansas City offers screenings for free preschool! See the flyer below for more information!

We're excited to welcome our new kindergartners to the Nest! Join us on Thursday, April 24th from 5:30-6:30 for Kindergarten Roundup!
Last month, our students focused on being safe, kind, and responsible on the bus by reviewing and practicing these expectations. Each time they demonstrated this, they earned a paper bus as a reward. Thanks to their hard work and commitment, they successfully earned a school-wide Transportation Celebration! We are so proud of their efforts in making our buses a safe and respectful space for everyone. ππ

π Annual Title I Survey
If you didn't get a chance to complete this survey during our Family Game Night, we'd love your feedback now. The survey is open until April 23rd, and gives us information about what our school can do to continue to partner with families and community members. Thank you!

π MAP Testing
As we approach state assessment season, we wanted to remind you that the MAP test will take place beginning the week of April 28th-May 23rd, and we kindly ask that you avoid scheduling vacations, appointments, or other absences during this time.
These assessments help measure student growth and ensure they are on track for success. A well-rested and prepared student performs best, so please plan accordingly to support your child during testing days. Thank you!

π« Makeup Attendance Days
The Board of Education officially approved the plan to make up five days of school from inclement weather this winter. As we shared last week, this means that school will be in session on the following days:
- Tuesday, May 27 (full day)
- Wednesday, May 28 (full day)
- Thursday, May 29 (half day, last day of school)
Friday, May 23 (the original last day of school) will now be a full day of school.
β College for Kids
See below for an opportunity for activities for your student. Classes are for students ages 11 and older.
π Free/Reduced Lunch Information
Every year, families need to complete the paperwork for Free/Reduced Meals. If you haven't completed this paperwork, the link to fill it out is below. You can submit this anytime for this school year.
Applications for the 2025-2026 school year begin July 1st.
π Transportation and Parking Reminders
In an effort to have a smooth dismissal process while keeping all students safe and accounted for, we are asking families who need to pick up a student early to have this done by 3:30 pm. Our front office gets extremely busy at the end of the day (and the beginning of the day) and we want to ensure our communication with staff and students is as seamless as possible.
In addition to this procedure, we are also asking for transportation changes for students to be communicated (by the adult at home) to our front office no later than 3:30pm. This allows our staff to get this communicated to classrooms and students in a timely manner.
Finally, we are asking all visitors to park in our parking lot (nearest the gym) between 8:40-9:30 and 3:00-4:30. This will ensure there are no obstacles for our buses and students during arrival and dismissal. This creates a safer environment for all.
Thank you for your diligence with all of these procedures.
