Mrs. Shields' Weekly Update
1st Grade Ireland Elementary August 31-Sept. 4
Notes from Mrs. Shields
Another great week is in the books. They did an awesome job adjusting to having a substitute teacher on Monday and even had their first experience with a math facts timed test.
Fun Run Fundraiser
The Fun Run has kept us quite busy and excited! We have been earning prizes and learning all about character and team work. I am proud to announce that as a school we have raised over $20,000 in a week! Wow!
Our class alone has exceeded our goal of $80 per lap for a total of $85 per lap pledged so far! So far our class has earned a dance party, extra recess, extra tech time, popsicles and finally a movie and popcorn! If we reach $90 we will earn Pajama Day. If we reach $100, we will earn a water balloon toss!!
We are currently in 7th place out of the entire school and 2nd place in First Grade to Mrs. Lehmkuhler's class who currently has $91 pledged per lap. Wow! How awesome are our students and community! I am so proud to be a part of this school family!
The actual Fun Run is this Thursday! It is going to be great fun for all.
SCHOOL PICTURES
School pictures are September 10th. I have attached a copy of the order form below. A form will also be coming home in your child's home folder.
HOMEWORK
Last week was our practice week for turning in homework. This week we will be moving tokens for missing and late homework.
Just a reminder that your child will have a Saxon Phonics page and Math homework page each night M-TH. These pages should not take long. Please check that your child is following directions and completing the homework correctly. I had a lot of mistakes on last week's homework. If you notice mistakes on the homework please help them fix it.
Saxon Phonics
Monday - Thursday your child will have a Saxon homework page. FRIDAY is an assessment on last two weeks of phonics.
Students are missing the coding on the homework. They have been taught it at school so please just remind them to code their Saxon and that their handwriting is neat and correct
They will have their first assessment on Friday and will be required to code the words.
Vowel Rule 1: A vowel followed by a consonant is short; code it with a breve.
Examples: căt, lŏg, tŭg, wĕt, sĭtVowel Rule 2: An open, accented vowel is long; code it with a macron.
Examples: mē’, hē, gō, sō
- At the bottom of each homework page, there is an explanation for parents about what your child learned that day and how to help with homework. You can also look at the front to see how it was done in class.
Please contact me if you have any questions, need help, or have concerns about the homework.
Math
Lesson 2
- Counting on to subtract
- You will receive a family letter explaining how you can help.
- We ask that your child does not learn to add by using fingers. Tokens or objects are ok when explaining the concept of adding 2 numbers.
- The ultimate goal of math facts is MEMORIZATION.
Math Facts/Timed Tests
I sent the addition and subtraction facts flashcards 0-6 home last week with a letter of explanation. We had our first timed test and had 7 children pass and earn their 0-6 addition scoop on the first try! Amazing job! Those kiddos will move on to work on the 0-6 subtraction while the rest of the class will continue to strive to earn their first green scoop. The goal and standard for first quarter is earning both 0-6 addition and subtraction. Please keep the flashcards that were sent home last week at home. The kids have a set at school that they use for practice.
