VSA Math Teaches Students Success

In elementary school, students are learning critical math skills, from number sense to operations of numbers. Number sense is essential to building a core understanding of math. By studying place value and using models and concrete representations, we ensure that students can then apply it to all numerical operations like adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers, fractions, and decimals. All elementary grades focus on these properties at different levels. At each level, it is crucial for students to form the necessary foundations to confidently navigate more extensive and intricate numerical concepts.

Here at VSA, we use a combination of group teaching and individualized self-paced learning to build math skills, ensuring students succeed without falling behind on critical foundations.

If a student comes in at a lower level than expected, we provide targeted mini-lessons to review and strengthen concepts. Students then have opportunities to practice until they demonstrate mastery. Once a student shows understanding, they can move to the next topic. Often, students just need help filling in small gaps that are pinpointed by VSA teachers.

Students working above grade level also receive specialized attention. Students who show mastery of a class concept may receive a mini-lesson previewing more advanced content, followed by tailored practice.

We offer two formats: virtual and in-person classes. In virtual classes, teachers lead lessons and discussions, while students practice online exercises simultaneously monitored by their teacher. In our in-person classes, we take an individualized self-paced approach.

Before each new chapter, diagnostic tests identify the students’ areas requiring improvement. We then develop plans to effectively teach that chapter. Each chapter includes reviews, quizzes, midterms, and finals. We also begin each class with one-minute speed drills for mental math.

In both formats, we personalize instruction to advance each student’s skills, whether they need extra help or enrichment. Our teachers are experienced and qualified in their grade levels, and they are committed to helping every student succeed. Our goal is keeping students engaged and growing in math abilities.

Our curriculum teaches core math principles, supplemented by Singapore Math word problems that provide challenging scenarios so students can apply their knowledge to real-world situations.

For younger grades (pre-K to 3rd grade), we offer two 1-hour classes per week. For older students (4th grade through Algebra), classes are once a week for two hours. Small class sizes ensure individual attention.

At VSA we are strong believers that students must have a solid foundation, and with that we do not just move students ahead or keep them behind unnecessarily. We want them to master the concept before moving ahead. Since all math is connected with the same concepts and properties, just at different types of numbers, it is important that they master at one level to move onto the next.
