Mini Mustang Matters

A Note From Mr. McCallum
Hey CES Families,
As we head into the week of Valentine's Day, our elementary school is buzzing with creativity and kindness. Our Mini Mustangs are busy expressing friendship and care through arts and crafts. We strive to keep our students engaged with various experiences, making sure to balance fun and hard work. We want to acknowledge the crucial role parents play as primary caregivers and teachers, supporting their children's growth and education. Your efforts in overcoming barriers and generously giving your time and resources are greatly appreciated.
Upcoming field trips are made possible by the ongoing CES Booster fundraising efforts, providing support for special events and existing programs like the Mustang Market Cart, WatchDOGS, and Popcorn Fridays. Our teachers have just completed STAR testing to monitor students' literacy and math growth, and we're thrilled to see that our student population has actually exceeded the expected growth of half a year with approximately .68 year's worth of growth! Way to go Dream Team!
We are also closely monitoring attendance to minimize the loss of instructional time. While our monthly attendance has been over 90%, we aim to achieve close to 100% daily attendance. Students meeting the criteria for our AttenDance incentive will enjoy a special experience this week. Officer Cutler collaborated with our PE teachers to cover safety topics related to the Michigan Model standards. Additionally, there are exciting opportunities in our Clio Community Education program, including a parent/child activity available on Monday.
We hope you enjoy reading through this newsletter. As always, feel free to reach out to the classroom teacher or office with any questions or concerns. Go Mustangs!

Meet Our Clio Elementary First Grade Dream Team!
The Importance of First Grade
First grade is one of the most critical grades in a child's education. It is a pivotal year for solidifying foundational skills that set students up to be lifelong readers and learners. Our first grade teachers at Clio Elementary aim to help your child become more independent and learn how to adapt to our school and district's routines and values. By the end of first grade your child should be on their way to reading fluently and writing paragraphs! First grade teachers teach more standards and have the widest range of reading skills to cover than any other grade!
Chera Cochran
Mrs. Cochran is one of our 1st grade teachers. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan-Flint in 2004. She also has a specialization in Early Childhood Education and has completed coursework towards her Masters in Elementary Reading and Literacy from Walden University.
This is Mrs. Cochran’s 3rd year teaching 1st grade at Clio, but she has been with the district for five years. Before being hired at Lacure Elementary, she worked as a long-term substitute teacher for both 1st and 2nd grades at Edgerton Elementary. Prior to teaching in Clio, she was a preschool teacher for 3 years for the Great Start Readiness Program in Mayville.
Mrs. Cochran and her husband have been married for 20 years, and have two children who attend Clio Schools. Their son Aaron is a junior, and their daughter Emalie is a 7th grader. During her free time, she enjoys gardening, exploring our beautiful state of Michigan, fishing, golfing, and kayaking with her family.
Rebecca Keeler
Mrs. Keeler is a first grade teacher, this is her 6th year at Clio and 13th year teaching. She earned her teaching degree from the University of Michigan. Over the years she has taught Title 1, kindergarten, first grade, and 3rd grade.
She and her husband of 18 years are both Clio Alumni. They have 4 children, Shelbey (19), Aubrey (17), Riley (13), and Edward (11), and an energetic Brittany pup, Finn! She loves reading, being outdoors in the summer, camping, kayaking, and traveling all over the country.
Kristen March
Mrs. March is one of our first grade teachers. She holds a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a ZS endorsement in Early Childhood Education from Eastern Michigan University, and is currently pursuing her master's degree in Reading.
She is in her fifth year of teaching in the Clio school district. She began her teaching career as a Young fives long term substitute teacher in Linden. A short time later, she started teaching at Garner Elementary as a Kindergarten teacher, then moved to Edgerton where she discovered her true passion for teaching first graders and continues that today at CES.
Mrs. March and her husband, Curt, have been married 23 years and are proud parents to their three children: Courtney (20 years old), Marisa (20 years old), and Emily (18 years old). They also have a dog named Meeka. In her spare time, Mrs. March enjoys reading, spending time with her family, and cheering for her favorite football team, the Detroit Lions (Go Lions)!
Lynn McMullen
Her real name is Mrs. McMullen but everyone calls her Mrs. M! This is her 3rd year at Clio and 14th year teaching. Mrs. M. graduated from SVSU in '2008 with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education. She taught for four years as a Title 1 teacher for Bendle School District. Then she moved into the classroom to teach Kindergarten for two years at Richfield Public Schools Academy. Her husband teaches Industrial Arts at Clio High School. They have two kiddos- Raegan who is 9 and Sawyer who is 3! The family loves to go camping during the summer. Mrs. M loves to spend time in her happy place- Robertson Lake, ON, Canada. They also have a hobby farm and help restore lighthouses in their spare time!
Stephanie Mink
Stephanie Mink is one of our 1st grade teachers at CES. She has her Bachelor's Degree from University of Michigan-Flint with a major in Elementary Education and an Early Childhood Endorsement. She also has a Master's Degree from Marygrove College.
This is her 24th year teaching 1st grade for Clio schools and she can't imagine doing anything else! She loves how much students grow both academically and socially in 1st grade. Her favorite part of teaching is building relationships with her students and their families. She loves connecting with them throughout all their years in school, and even after. The last few years she has enjoyed seeing her "grandstudents" enter elementary school! How cool to be able to teach your past students' children and realize what amazing people your past 1st graders have become!
She and her husband, Vince, live in Clio and have 2 sons. Nathan is a senior at Clio High School and is involved with all things music at CHS as well as competing on the varsity bowling team. Steven is a junior at EMU studying to be a music teacher while playing in the marching band, pep band, and orchestra there.
She enjoys spending time with family, attending both her sons’ instrumental music performances, reading, and writing notes and cards.
Katie Moyer
Katie Moyer is our newest first grade teacher at Clio Elementary. She started at Clio Schools at Lacure as a booster. Then, she spent three years subbing throughout the district before she decided to teach full time. She has taught kindergarten, first grade, and summer school. Prior to teaching, she was a Children’s Ministry Director at her church. Katie earned an Associate’s degree from Mott Community College, a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Rochester College, a teaching certificate, and is currently working on a Master’s degree in Literacy from American College of Education. She has been married to her husband Chris for 17 years and they have two kids that attend Clio schools. Liam, a 9th grader and Lana, a 4th grader. Katie also has two cats (Vader and Pandy) and 1 dog (Sandy). In her spare time, she enjoys reading, listening to music, and spending time with her family.
Sarah Stimson
Patricia Wager
Ms. Wager has been teaching First Grade her entire career, first at Lacure Elementary and now at Clio Elementary School. She grew up and still lives here in Clio. After graduating from Clio High School, she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan-Flint. She also obtained her Master’s Degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. She continues to grow as a teacher by completing many additional graduate level courses and investing time each year to attend workshops and read professional texts.
She enjoys spending time with family and friends. Her favorite activity is traveling around our beautiful state. Teaching is her hobby of choice and she enjoys getting the room ready each fall, sharing ideas with other teachers, and planning learning experiences for her students.
