MVPA Weekly Update
March 6 - 10, 2023
Dear Parents and Greyhounds,
This is our last week before everyone heads off to a much-deserved Spring Break (March 13 – 17).
I know that right now, there is a lot of concern and speculation about a takeover of HISD by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). While the concern is justified, one thing that has caught my attention is that there is not as much talk about the children inside of our schools. There is a lot of focus on what will happen to the currently elected school board and to the Superintendent of schools. While those concerns are legitimate, we need to center our collective attention on the tens of thousands of children that will be most heavily impacted by these potential changes.
While some families may have choices available to them, the vast majority of HISD families and students will not.
I commit to you that no matter what happens next, the focus of our faculty and staff will continue to be on the safety and education of the children inside of MPVA.
As always, we are grateful for your constant support.
Respectfully,
Mr. Sarabia
MPVA ACADEMICS
Congratulations to our Name That Book team who took 2nd place at the HISD Name that Book Finals! In order to advance to the finals, they had to go through a preliminary round and place in the top two. Competition is always fierce and this year was no different. We are super proud of our students and our Librarian/Media Specialist, Celeste Cooper! #WeAreMeyerland
MPVA FINE ARTS
A huge shout-out this week to our Boys’ Choir and Varsity Treble Choir. Both groups went to UIL contest, and both earned Superior (1 on a 1-5 scale) ratings across the judging board for both concert and sight-reading competition. This was an outstanding accomplishment for our students and our Choir Director, Jenson Wall. #WeAreMeyerland
VERIZON INNOVATION LEARNING SCHOOL (VILS)
Girls Who Code
Many in the Girls Who Code (GWC) club have been working on a project that explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used for good. Our students have deep thoughts on AI. Watch this short videoas a student, Nova, explains her project.
Virtual Reality (VR) Adventures
This week Mr. Reynoso and Mr. Giltrop’s classes visited the Innovative Lab to learn about some cool resources that will be available to them next year as eighth graders. Students learned a little about 3D printing and got to try out a class set of VR goggles. The Shark Experience was the most talked about adventure! Additionally, our amazing student tech team members led groups of students at different 3D stations and helped with the VR goggles.

2023 Opening Day
FROM THE PTO
There is one week left to get pledges for the Greyhounds Get Down Dance-A-Thon happening next Friday, March 10th.
What is Greyhounds Get Down? It is a fundraiser led by the MPVA PTO to raise money for a specific campus need. This year’s focus is on the PE Department. Want to help our outdoor fields? Want to paint our track? Want to repaint our outdoor sport courts? Want to help our gym? Want to get some field equipment and lane rope storage for the pool?
PTO has BIG goals, but if we all work together we can accomplish them faster.
So what do you need to do?
Scan this QR code and send the link to your parents to ask them to set up your pledge page. If they are registered on PTO's Membership Toolkit website it will be easy for them to set up your page. If they are not registered yet, that is easy to do too.
Once your page is set up….take that link and share it with friends and family. Text them, email them, post on your socials, call them and ask them to make a pledge in your name! No amount is too small (or too big!) Next week there will be different surprises daily for students collecting pledges.
Then on the morning of March 10th in the MPVA gym we plan to have a grade-level 30 minute dance-a-thons with prizes, a DJ, the works, to celebrate the end of the fundraiser before heading into Spring Break.
Don’t like to dance? We got you. We will have a Wallflower “chill out” area with games and you can ask for pledges for that too.
Our big goal is $25,000! Greyhounds, let’s get down to fundraising!
