Anglo European School
Bulletin for w/c 8th January 2024 - Week 2
Welcome to 2024! It was really lovely to see all our students back today and there's been a lot of discussion about their favourite Christmas presents. Thank you to all those who sent in gifts for staff - the edible ones have all been shared in the staffroom and will enhance coffee breaks through a cold January! These, and the sentiments sent in lovely Christmas cards were all very much appreciated.
We have welcomed the students back today and thank you for your support in making sure this was a smart start with uniform and equipment all well prepared. We have had surprising few false nails and eyelashes and additional jewellery to deal with today - well done parents!
A reminder that Monday is Day 6 for those who assist students in packing their bags and ensuring the right books are in there for the day ahead. Please also make sure that they have a reading book, and essential items of stationary/equipment and for some, their PE Kits. I hope they bought kits home for a wash in December! A full pencil case with pens, pencils, ruler, rubber and calculator.
As ever, if your financial circumstances have changed and you think you may be eligible for support from our Pupil Premium Fund to support you with educational activities, uniform or equipment, please contact the Finance Office and they will assist in helping you complete the application. You can also write to us in confidence.
There are lots of exciting events planned for this term, culminating in our annual Eisteddfod in March. We wish everyone a healthy, peaceful and successful term ahead.
2023 Russian Translation Competition
Huge congratulations to Lower Sixth student, Sophia who has been announced as the winner of the 2023 Russian Translation Competition from the University of Sheffield. She has been awarded with an Amazon gift voucher and an invitation to a Translation Workshop, to be held on 17th January. Mrs Gee and Mrs Latimer, Head of Languages met with Sophia to congratulate her on this amazing achievement.
Sophia was expected to translate a section from a novel and the university wrote to congratulate her on her excellent work. Sophia has learnt Russian since Year 8 at AES and is now studying A level Russian alongside English Language and Literature, Politics and History, where a module of her course focuses on Russian history which has further fuelled her fascination with Russian culture, history, politics and traditions. The University of Sheffield holds Mrs King and Mrs Geraghty as notable alumni and we will be furthering our links with their prestigious school of language and culture.
This month, Russian is language of the month and we will be sharing Russian food and culture. Students will be having a Russian toy-making workshop and there will be a Russian doll design competition.
Arabic Visit to Leighton House
The trip to the Leighton house was thoroughly planned with various cultural experiences that deepened our understanding of the Arabic world and Victorian times. Leighton House serves as the only public gallery in the Holland Park Circle, displaying a vast collection of Sir Frederic Leighton’s artwork and international exhibits, including delicate tapestries from Persia, bust statues from Greece and intricate tiles from Damascus. Moreover, the house converted into a gallery was given exorbitant additions like the Arab Hall that captivated people with many designs: geometric arches, calligraphic Arabic adorning turquoise tiles, intricate carpets surrounding a miniature fountain, a pierced wooden screen as a window (masharabiya), and a grand chandelier hung from a domed ceiling. This was meticulously designed by the avid traveller Leighton, who ventured across North Africa and the Middle East, to evoke an authentic feel of the Arabian world. Leighton was renowned for his popular ‘Flaming June’ that exuded classical themes ubiquitous in his works. Recently, the ‘Where Worlds Meet’ exhibition by Maha Ahmed (a Pakistani artist) drew inspiration from Japanese art to show various landscapes with crane motifs on multiple mediums like gouache on coffee-stained paper. Afterwards, a straddle through the streets of London led us to the authentic Lebanese restaurant, Baba Ghanouj, where we were treated to delicacies like Baklava, Shawarmas, Shish and Falafels. Personally, the food was undoubtedly a highlight that let the Mediterranean cuisine shine bright.
Care Home Christmas Visit
Residents from Ardtully Retirement Home were unable to attend our Senior Citizens' Christmas Party last term so our students brought Christmas to them by spreading festive cheer and showing their care and appreciation for the older generation. The residents enjoyed spending time with the students and were very grateful for their Christmas gifts and their kindness.
Rotary Shoebox Scheme
We were thrilled to join the Rotary Shoebox Scheme again this year. Congratulations to our Lower Sixth International Campaigning CAS group for spearheading this initiative and managing to fill 85 boxes with gifts and essentials for children in need across countries like Moldova and Ukraine.
Extra-Curricular
Engaging in extra-curricular activities is more than just a school routine; it's a gateway to boundless opportunities for growth and discovery. Our school boasts a vibrant array of extra-curricular activities, providing students with avenues to explore their passions, foster leadership skills, and build lifelong friendships. From athletic pursuits like football, basketball, and netball to creative outlets like drama, music, and art clubs, there's something for every interest. Our debate society, coding clubs, and enterprise club offer platforms to cultivate critical thinking, technological prowess, and entrepreneurship. These activities not only complement academic pursuits but also enrich the overall student experience, nurturing well-rounded individuals poised for success in both their academic and personal endeavours. Which will you join this term?
Below is an Article written by Year 8 student Maha about her chosen extra-curricular activity, Sea Cadets.
Sea Cadets
Sea Cadets is a national charity that is in the UK, Northern Ireland, Malta, and Bermuda. We follow a training plan and rank structure that is like the Royal Navy’s. There are many opportunities available for you at Sea Cadets, such as; Boating, Meteorology, Catering, Aviation and many more. Sea Cadets can help you become a more confident person. You may find things like taking charge in groups difficult, but with this organisation you can gain positive habits and even support people who are less experienced as you in these things. Another important thing from Sea Cadets is you can achieve multiple Duke of Edinburgh awards and BTEC’s in Marine Engineering, Public Service, Citizenship, and Music. A main experience that I found the most memorable was an offshore trip I went on. This was from Weymouth to St. Malo in France. It was a week away from home, in a powerboat with its own barracks. There were twelve cadets on board, and it was probably the best thing I have done with Sea Cadets. A field I find interesting within the Cadets is drill, which is walking smartly with purpose and posture and learning how to move your body in a controlled and synchronised manner. I have already achieved the basic qualification for this, and I am planning to become an instructor for it.
