Q: What was your first paying job?
A: Well, at 16, I worked at Wendy's for two weeks, but I got a call from Piggly Wiggly (a then local grocery store in Memphis, my hometown, so I left Wendy's. At Piggly Wiggly, I began as a cashier, but I was promoted to the cash countdown room after 3 months. =0) I think I made $4.25/hour in 1985.
A: The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. He is a both a medical doctor and an author of amazing fiction who intimately ties families to medicine in early 19th century India using his mother's stories to him as a boy. Verghese is a masterful writer and weaves his tale with substance and surprise as he intertwines the lives, hopes, disappointments, and dreams of his characters. The 700 pages read quickly and leaving you wanting to know more.
Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: A nurse and a teacher; both of those. I was a medical technologist for 18 years (and a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy Reserves) and then completed my coursework for English literature and Education. Not including homeschooling my sons, I have been in public education for the past 16 years.
Q: What’s the best place you’ve traveled to?
A: Barcelona, Spain. I was on an educational tour with a group of 35 other teachers that I met for the first time at the airport. The city was beautiful, the people welcoming, and the food was delicious!
Q: What three items would you take with you to a deserted island?
A: A book, a puppy, and snacks for us both!
She adds, "My educational superpower is reinvigorated when I am around our students--laughing and learning along with them--it is my goal this year to interact more with our students across the district."
