A note from Mrs. Stewart ...
Things going on around here!
Wojo's Holiday Greenery ~ If you ordered items from the Oakwood PTA's Wojo's greenery sale you can pick your order up this Wednesday, November 29th from 3:30-5:30.
Scholastic BOGO Book Fair ~ Mrs. Babb is preparing for a special BOGO book fair that will start December 4th and run all week until December 8th. This book fair is the OE library's gift to our families. This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase books as gifts. For each book you purchase, you will receive one of equal or lesser value FREE!
Community Christmas Toy Store ~ The wrapped Christmas toy collection box has returned once again to the OES foyer. Each year, the Brandon Fire Department collects toys for children in our area who may otherwise not receive a gift. OES staff and families have been very generous over the years and our box always overflows! You can participate by sending in a new, unwrapped toy.
Outdoor Recess ~ Children continue to go outside for recess as the temperatures drop. We only keep kids in when the actual temperature is 15 degress or less or the wind chill is 0 degrees or below. Please remember to make sure your sons or daughters have appropriate cold-weather gear. Each year, we notice that cold hands are the biggest challenge on the playground. The thin, knit gloves are just not enough protection for kids when they are outside. Thicker, water-resistent or water-proof mittens/gloves are really necessary to keep those little fingers dry and warm.
Meadow Brook Holiday Walk ~ Attached is a flyer for Meadow Brook Hall's annual Holiday Walk event. On the flyer you will find a specially priced coupon to admit Brandon students for $2.50! Hopefully, many of our OES families will be able to take advantage of this opportunity.
Principal's Positive 200 ~ Our behavior program, P200, is well underway and the recognition bulletin board in the hallway is filling up! Our students are working hard to display their very best Oakwood 3R behavior. Below are some pictures that show the board and Mrs. Brady's class as they came to choose their treats from Mrs. Stewart's mobile concession stand before Thanksgiving break!
Kathryn was the first to have her name added!
It is filling with names of 3R students.
Snacks were delivered for movie/pajama day before Thanksgiving!

News from Mrs.Bevel, Project Lead the Way (PLTW)
Hello Families,
I have loved getting to know so many engineers and watching them design, sketch, think, problem solve and work collaboratively with their peers. This quarter wrapped up earlier in November and we have already kicked off PLTW for the 2nd quarter! That means students in junior kindergarten, kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 4th grades will be receiving Project Lead the Way instruction on a weekly basis until the end of the 2nd quarter (January 25th) and then again during the 4th quarter. Here is what has been happening in Project Lead the Way:
Junior kindergarten has been continuing to learn how to determine if something is living or nonliving. We ask ourselves these 3 questions: Does it move? Does it breathe? Does it need food or water?
Kindergarteners have been classifying forces of motion into two categories: push and pull. Students have illustrated these forces in addition to participating in a Scavenger Hunt to be on the lookout for these forces.
3rd grade engineers used Newton’s Law of Motion and the knowledge of Science of Flight to create gliders using the design process. First, engineers sketched using an i-pad. Next they transferred the sketch to paper where they labeled the parts: fuselage, wings, and stabilizer. Third, students participated in three challenges that allowed them to make changes by adding and taking away weight keeping balanced and unbalanced forces at the front of their thinking. Finally, students experimented with different glider parts to determine how they interact with one another.
5th graders followed a step by step process to understand how different parts in their VEX kits work. In teams, students have been working collaboratively to build a robot and reflect on the design process to make changes in order to solve a task. Engineers had 2 minutes to move 3 blocks into a collection zone on an obstacle course. They had to design and add appropriate pieces to accomplish this task.
Educationally Yours,
Mrs. Bevel
