Grade 4 & 5 Winter Concert - THIS THURSDAY

Thursday January 19 - Grades 4 & 5

Upper Nyack Elementary Grade 4/5 Concert: (9:30am)

The Music Department happily invites fourth and fifth grade parents to our Winter Concert for Grades 4 and 5 on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 9:30 AM at Upper Nyack Elementary School. The performance will be in the multi-purpose room and will be in person. We invite two parents/guardians per family to see your children perform. Please have your child dress in black and white if they can. We know you will enjoy the concert and your children will be thrilled to have you in the audience.

Parking for the concert is extremely limited on the school property and in the surrounding areas. Parking in front of the building AFTER MORNING ENTRY is allowed.

Entrance to the concert will be through the cafeteria doors on the right side of the school only. The doors will open at 9:15 AM. Unfortunately, there is no reserved seating for this concert. Thank you in advance for your assistance, as we make this wonderful occasion successful.

PTA / IDEA NEXT MEETING - WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2023

The next meeting is of the PTA will be Wednesday, February 8 at 6:30 pm in the Global Learning Commons at UNES. The IDEA committee will meet immediately after that meeting in the same space.

CAREER DAY IS COMING

During the month of March, each of the elementary schools will be hosting virtual Career presentations. Students will have the opportunity to learn about different careers by viewing videos created by parents, community members and local businesses. We will be collecting videos from members of our community who are interested in showcasing their profession. These videos can be recorded on iMovie or screencast. Videos can be however long or short you wish and however creative you would like. Once collected they will be uploaded to a platform for student viewing.

We are reaching out to you, the members of our community and would love for you to participate! Do you have an exciting career or job that you would like to share with our students? Are you an entrepreneur? Did you start your own business? No career or job is too small or too large - the goal of this program is to expose our students to the wide variety of ways that they can be productive and self-sufficient.

Rockland Pride Center Visit

I was warmly welcomed by our community partners at the Rockland Pride Center last week. They offer incredible services to our Nyack and LGBTQ+ communities, and it was fantastic to have some insights into all that they do. They are doing great things in the community and offer incredible ways to support our parents and students. I am looking forward to strong partnerships in the future!

World Read Aloud Day - February 1, 2023

Thanks to our UNES library media specialist, Julie Zweibel, we will be celebrating WORLD READ ALOUD DAY (WRAD) on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. We have a total of 16 authors who will conduct virtual read alouds for our students over the course of the day. Then, they will spend time talking to students about the process and craft that goes into writing a book. It's a magical experience for students, and I hope that you will speak to your children about their experience that evening.

Hats and Wearable Tech

We've seen a recent uptick of students wearing hats and hoods in school. District code of conduct prohibits these items while in the school building, except in cases of religious observance or health reasons. Any support that you can provide to help children understand will be greatly appreciated. Please be in touch with the school if there are extenuating circumstances.

Also, many students seem to be wearing smart watches and other wearable tech lately. Though students will be permitted to wear these devices, they may not be used during the school day and are technically meant to be turned off. While we would prefer that they are off and put away in backpacks with cell phones, students will be allowed to wear them as long as they don't become a distraction. We ask that parents making use of these devices have conversations with their children about the proper use of this technology. Please help us in educating your children about the correct time and place for the use of these devices. Also, if your child has an Apple Watch, please consider turning on SCHOOL TIME - CLICK HERE during school hours. Many other devices have similar features if you research it.
