Try This . . .
A not so traditional Christmas tradition
My parents felt very strongly about bringing out the season of giving at Christmas and creating an atmosphere where the joy of Christmas lasted the entire day. It began with their desire to see myself and my two sisters enjoy each gift and not just throw the pile of new things to the side as we tear open the next gift.
So the tradition began where we spread the joy of giving and time together across the entire day (and even beyond). We wrote times on slips of paper in two hour increments (10, 12, 2, 4, 6). We would then draw a time, and that would be the time that we GAVE our gifts out to the family. For the next two hours, the giver was allowed to pick something that they wanted the family to do until it was the next givers turn. We have taken naps (my dad's favorite go to activity), sang carols to the neighbors, had a dance party, played card games, done a craft, went sledding (I grew up in Michigan) ....we've done some creative activities! Yes, my dad has even played with Barbies in the dream house.
As I grew up, I realized how excited I was to be the giver of the gifts and spend the time with the family. When we were younger, it allowed us to enjoy each toy or game with the family before moving on to the next. As we got older, at times we would enjoy the activities together so much we would lose track of the time.
We all have our special Christmas traditions that mean so much to our hearts. If you are looking for a new spin on Christmas Day, maybe your family would like to give this idea a try. If you are traveling to see family on Christmas Day, this nontraditional Christmas can be done in short time increments too. o
No matter how you spend your day, we at ProvKIDS hope you have a blessed season filled with embracing love of Jesus Christ.
