
A Foreigner in Britain

Pablo, the friend of Antonio, was very surprised when he saw that the pubs close before 11:00 pm in London, but now pubs don't close so early. Antonio and Pablo went to a hotel to take the afternoon tea. In the hotel, the people were nicely dressed.
On New Year's Eve, they went to the Big Ben to hear the bells, but they couldn't hear it because of the noise of the people.
Afternoon tea
British people eat small sandwiches, cakes and scones for the afternoon tea.
New Year's Eve
Near the Big Ben, there were 20,000 people celebrating the New Year, they were wearing funny hats and there was a festivity atmosphere.
The Globe Theatre
The first Shakespeare's plays were performed here. It was built in 1599 but, it burned down in the 17th century.
In London, there are a lot of people of different nationalities and everyone was accustomed to the great variety of races and religions. For example, London's Chinatown where there are Chinese restaurants, Asian supermarkets or Chinese fruit markets.
Pablo, Antonio and Mike went to Notting Hill, where there was a Caribbean carnival, it takes place on the last weekend in August.
Jorvik Viking Centre
It's a Viking museum which is built where Archeologists found part of the Viking town preserved under the modern town. It recreates Jorvik in 948 AD with characters, sights, sounds and smells.
York Minster
It's the biggest Gothic cathedral in Europe and is very impressive. It takes more than 250 years to build and was finished in 1480. It has windows with stained glass and one of them tells the story of the beginning and end of the world.
Antonio had a girlfriend in Oxford, named Lisa. She studied at Oxford University, which is one of the most famous universities in the world. One day, Antonio decided to have fish and chips, a typically British meal. Antonio and Lisa celebrated the arrival of spring with traditions, the May Ball and May Morning.
Oxford University
It's one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. Twenty-five British prime ministers studied here and other famous people like Oscar Wilde and Bill Clinton.
Fish and Chips
It is a popular kind of fast food in some parts of the world, it is made of chips and a deep fried fish fillet. It is common in British cities. The first Fish and Chips were found in the East end of London in the late 19th Century.
The May Ball
They are elegant dances where the men wear dinner suits and the women wear formal dresses. it is celebrated in many colleges of Britain in May.
Antonio went to Wales because his friend Gareth invited him to his wedding. Antonio didn't know anything about Wales, the only thing he knew was that there was a language called Welsh. On his travel to Wales, he visited some interesting buildings and festivals.
Castle Coch
It's a fairy-tale castle. It was built between 1875 and 1879 on the foundation of a thirteenth-century castle by a local nobleman and his architect. Its conical towers and needle-sharp turrets create an idyllic vision of the Middle Ages.
The Royal National Eisteddfod
It's the largest popular festival of competitive music-making and poetry-writing in Europe and it takes place every August for eight days. Everything in the festival is in Welsh. When Antonio went to the festival there were 6,000 competitors and over 150,000 spectators.
Antonio and his English cousin, Louise, were in a little Thai restaurant in the middle of Manchester. When they were waiting for their meal they saw David Beckham, he was a player of Manchester United Football Club and Louise asked him for his autograph. Another day they went to Old Trafford to see a match of the "Red Evils" (Manchester United) against Liverpool. At the stadium, they heard people singing "Come on, you Reds".
David Beckham
He is one of the most famous football players in the world. He has played in famous teams, as Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan or PSG, the last team where he played. He's married to Victoria Adams from the Spice Girls, the one who is called the Posh Spice. On 16 May 2013,he announces his retirement from the professional football.
Manchester United and Old Trafford
Manchester United is a football club from the north of England that plays in the Premier League and its stadium is Old Trafford. The club was founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to its current stadium in 1910. Manchester United is also called "The Red Evils". Old Trafford can hold over 67,000 persons.

It's the capital of Scotland and is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It's on the east coast of Scotland. After London, more people visit Edinburgh than anywhere else in Britain.
Edinburgh Festival
It started in 1947. Every year there is an official programme of classical music, opera, theatre and comedy.
The Festival Fringe
It's another unofficial festival that started the same year as the Edinburgh Festival. It happens outside the main festival.
Edinburgh Castle
The castle has a museum and the British army is based here. From the castle, we can see the city situated between the sea and the mountains.
