Students Celebrate World Read Aloud Day 2024
On Wednesday, February 7th, Lyons Elementary celebrated World Read Aloud Day in partnership with students from the Lyons High School Leadership and Community Class. Leadership students were able to share the gift of reading in over ten classrooms and even outside on the playground! World Read Aloud Day was founded in 2010 by LitWorld.org. According to LitWorld.org the purpose of World Read Aloud Day is to “create community and amplify new stories, and to advocate for literacy as a foundational human right.” The joy of reading was seen in many classrooms on Wednesday and even included a special group that wanted to read back to the high school students.
A special thank you to Mrs. Kelly Wetmore, Mrs. Molly Thurston, Ms. Erica Gansz, Principal Taylor, Principal Schott, and the Transportation Department for collaborating to make this a success!
A Message from Christine Taylor, Lyons Elementary School Principal
It’s hard to believe that February has begun at Lyons Elementary School. The hallways are filled with grade level trophy posters for Reading and Math success. Students are adding their names to the trophies as they demonstrate growth in iReady. We are very impressed with the hard work, determination, and academic success we are seeing at all grade levels. Keep up the great work LES! Grade level assemblies this month focused on celebrating Black History Month and reinforcing the importance of having a growth mindset in our daily lives. Many teachers will be working with their students this month to reflect on progress, complete data chats, and set goals for success. Report cards were sent home with students on February 2nd. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or you would like to meet with them. Mid-year, local assessments in Mathematics and English Language Arts took place in January and early February. These assessments provide a current level of performance for all students and allow teachers to plan for individualized instruction. Plory from iReady also visited LES to spread some cheer and motivate students to do their best. iReady Family Reports will be mailed home soon.
Black History Month Research Projects Bloom at LES
After reading Have You Thanked an Inventor Today? by Patrice McLaurin and illustrated by Dian Wang, students in Miss Hill's Kindergarten Class chose a black inventor to research and celebrate. The student research includes working one on one with Miss Hill to look up pictures and more information about their chosen inventor, and finishes with developing a poster to hang up in the hallway to showcase their learning. Miss Hill and her students hope it serves as a learning opportunity for other students in the school.

LES Raises Funds for Kids Heart Challenge
A whopping 86 Lyons Elementary School students participated in the Kids Heart Challenge this year. They set a collective goal to raise $5,000 for the American Heart Association, and surpassed it by raising $6,867! To celebrate their achievement, students stayed after school on Tuesday, February 13th and Thursday, February 15th to play four square and the new LES craze, "gaga ball" (pictured).
All funds raised are donated to the American Heart Association for kids with heart illnesses. Great job, LES heart heroes!
A Message from Renee Schott, MS/HS Principal
The start of the second semester has been busy at the Middle/High School. We kicked off the semester with the Career & Technical Education (CTE) month. Various industry partners have been available in the LGI speaking with students about opportunities beyond high school related to CTE programs of study. Sophomores visited Wayne Technical and Career Center to learn about the different programs offered to them in their Junior year. The Road to Workplace Success series started the week of February 5th. We have students in grades 10-12 reporting to the Lyons Community Center for a lunch and learn session around self-advocacy at work, job searching, onboarding, and staying successful in the workplace. This is a great partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County. Our FFA students participated in the District 8 Leadership development event in Penn Yan early this month. Many members earned awards in different categories at the event. We celebrated our Merit, Honor, and High Honor students from marking period 2 with an ice cream social this month. Our winter athletics teams are starting to wind down and prepare for playoffs and sectionals in the coming weeks.
