Lab Work
By Collin Dibble
AP Chem students worked in pairs to conduct paper chromatography lab experiments. This powerful analytic technique is used by chemists all over the world to separate solutes in a mixed solution. Students in this lab start by separating dyes as they travel on paper resulting in colorful chromatograms. Then, working together, they identify each dye’s affinity for the mobile and stationary phase. Finally, they use their class data and their individual research to identify the dyes found in each mystery mixture.
Get With the Program
By Brannon Fissette
Students in COM 200, Introduction to Programming, Games, Apps and Society are hitting the ground running! They will begin the course by learning a block coding of java script. As they develop their new skills, students will create a learning game for GWA lower school students. Some are going with a math lesson and others are finding creative ways to teach younger students about dress code. Over the next few months students will transition to learning Python, HTML, CSS and more! Students will work on individual and group projects and gain a basic understanding of the development world.
Apply for Your GOAL Tax Credit
The Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program is the result of the Education Expense Credit law, passed by Georgia’s elected officials in 2008. This program allows individuals and corporations to receive a dollar-for-dollar Georgia income tax credit for redirecting a portion of their state income tax payments to GOAL. The GOAL Program is a remarkable and important opportunity provided to Georgians by our elected officials.
GOAL uses these redirected funds to provide private school scholarships to qualified students transferring from a Georgia public school. Taxpayers can designate which school receives their redirected tax payments for scholarships, and as a GOAL partner, GWA is able to directly benefit from your redirected funds.
This is a proven opportunity that is a win-win-win for taxpayer donors, scholarship recipients, and our school community. By simply contributing to Georgia GOAL for a 100% Georgia income tax credit – in other words, by contributing with dollars you must spend anyway, you will help maximize financial aid funds available to the school to be used for tuition assistance for deserving families desiring a George Walton Academy education. New Senior Class Tradition
When GWA senior Bulldogs unite under the strong leadership of passionate faculty and staff – great things happen! The Class of 2023 embarked on the first-ever senior retreat this week and enjoyed 48 hours of togetherness. They played a wide variety of games, danced, flew over the treetops on a zipline, swam, kayaked, sent friends flying off a blob, competed in intense challenges as part of a team, shared stories, spoke from the heart, listened, learned, bonded, and experienced a full range of emotions as the leadership team worked closely with our seniors in daily group sessions and a packed schedule of engaging activities. They head into senior year as a class with a new appreciation for their individual classmates and excitement for the boundless opportunities that lie ahead! The next time you see one of our seniors, be sure to ask them about the retreat. No doubt, they will have plenty to share!
Picture Ready!
Yearbook portraits will be taken next week for all grades EXCEPT SENIORS! Lower school will also do group photos by class. Photo order forms should come home sometime this week. If you don't get a form, make sure to ask your student about them or pick up an extra one from the front office or print this PDF. Make sure to send in the completed form with payment on your child's photo day. Photo days are as follows:
MIddle/Upper School Portraits (except seniors) - Tuesday, August 23
Lower School Portraits - Wednesday, August 24
Lower School Class Group Photos - Thursday, August 25
The goal is to have photos completed by 12:30 p.m. each day, so please make sure your students are on time in the morning for drop off.

Welcome New Bulldogs!
We are excited to be hosting our New Student Lunch events on August 30 and September 1. This is a time for our newest bulldogs to mingle, get to know their support people on campus, and hopefully make some new friends. Being a new student can sometimes be hard so we want to try and make it a little easier with food, games, and conversation. It's a great time to check in and let us know how they are doing with their classes and making new friends on campus. Remind your student to stop by!
Season Opener
Cheer on the varsity Dawgs tomorrow night as they face Lake Oconee Academy on the road! Click HERE for details on tickets, directions and parking. Let's go Bulldogs!
