News from the Nurse
Our campus is beginning to see signs of sickness. With that being said, please do not send your student to school if they have a fever. Doing so, puts your student as well as other students and faculty at risk. A fever, per our district policy is defined as a temperature of 100 degrees or above. In order to return to school, a student must be fever free without the use of fever-reducing medications for 24 hours before they can return. Protect yourself and your loved ones by doing the following:
- Taking a flu shot
- Washing your hands frequently or using hand sanitizer
- Stay home when you are sick
- Covering your cough
Let’s keep flu and other illnesses out of school!!!
Have a safe, healthy, and Happy Thanksgiving Break
Health Tip from Nurse Teeling
The importance of BREAKFAST:
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, however, with a morning of competing priorities, snooze buttons, and questionable appetites, it’s easy to skip this important meal.
Check out the 5 reasons for your tween or teen to eat breakfast:
- Energy-Breakfast is one of the best ways to recharge your batteries especially after a night of fasting while sleeping! Make sure that you BREAK THE FAST!
- Improved concentration-Studies suggest that eating a nutritious breakfast improves brain function, especially memory and recall.
- Better grades-Students who eat a regular breakfast perform better academically
- Healthy weight-Those who skip breakfast tend to make up for it throughout the day
- It tastes great—Try some grab and go meals such as some oatmeal with fruit and toppings such as granola for an extra crunch, a hard-boiled egg, a fresh fruit smoothie
Easy Strawberry smoothie recipe
1 cup strawberries-fresh/frozen
1 cup milk of choice
1 T honey or agave
1 cup ice cubes
Blend and enjoy!
Could also add spinach for extra nutrients
Athletic Event Student Expectations
It's Basketball Season!
We are excited that basketball season has arrived! Please help us reiterate the campus and district game expectations to your student(s) as we continue to support our athletes through the season.
- Students must be in the district approved dress code at the game.
Students should remain in the stands or gym to watch the games and limit their trips to the concession and restroom areas to halftime and between games. Students are not allowed to loiter/hang out around the concession and restroom area at any time.
Once students leave the game, they are not allowed to return.
- Students’ conduct should promote sportsmanship and reflect Vandeventer in a positive and respectful manner. Conversations should be appropriate and profanity is prohibited.
- Students should not have the following items or similar items with them: football, soccer ball, tennis ball, skate board, scooter, etc. Please leave items such as these in the car or at home.
- Students must be picked up no later than 15 minutes after the conclusion of the game in order to attend future extracurricular events. Students are encouraged to call parents at the beginning of the last quarter rather than waiting until the game is over. Administrators will wait with students until they are picked up to ensure student safety, so please ensure that your student has a ride immediately following the game.
- Students not meeting these expectations may be asked to sit with their parents (if parents are present), or to call their parents to pick them up. Students may also not be allowed to return for future extracurricular events.
- Food and drink are prohibited from being brought into either gym.
Thank you so much for your support of our Vandeventer Viking athletes, families and spectators – we’ll see you at the games! GO VIKINGS!
Campus & District Information
Guardian Gateway
Frisco ISD is making it easier for guardians to find key information about their students through a new portal called the Guardian Gateway. The Guardian Gateway portal was created and designed based on feedback from parents who were looking for an easier and secure way to access information for multiple children within one platform. Be on the lookout for information that will come via email starting January 15 to begin the sign up process. Soon guardians will be able to view multiple children within one HAC account, access STAAR scores and find regular important updates all in one place. We look forward to sharing the Guardian Gateway portal with you and appreciate your patience during the District Wide rollout. Click here to learn more.
Open referrals for FISD’s Gifted and Talented program are now available. Open referrals will be accepted January 9th through January 24th. All paperwork must be submitted by midnight on January 24th. If you are interested in having your child screened for our GT program, please contact Kristen Roberts at robertsk@friscoisd.org. If your child is already receiving GT services, your child does not need to be rescreened. For more information concerning this process, please visit the department section on the FISD website and click on the Gifted Education link.
It is time for the Geography Bee!
This year the qualifying test to determine the top 10 finalists will be taken on January 7th. Once the students qualify, the VMS Geography Bee will be held on January 28th after school in the library. If your student would like to study for the qualifying test, here are some National Geographic Resources. Happy Studying!
