Muskego Lakes Family Newsletter
September 17th, 2021

Muskego Lakes Principal
Dear Muskego Lakes Families,
Did you know that we have over 30+ clubs/athletic opportunities for our Muskies to participate in? In fact, last school year 82% of students at Muskego Lakes participated in at least one club or sport at MLMS.
This week, we had our Muskego Lakes Co-Curricular Fair over lunches to make sure students know about all of the different clubs and athletics we have to offer.
Middle school is such an optimal time for students to explore, discover their passions, and connect with others with similar interests. So, we work really hard to offer a wide range of opportunities for students. By participating in clubs or sports, students grow in their self-confidence, practice healthy risk-taking, develop friendships, and learn about their strengths beyond the classroom. In fact, many staff are running clubs based on students' requests.
Just this week during the club fair, 15+ students asked if we had a photography club. In response, one of our custodians Bob George is going to offer workshops throughout the school year for students interested in photography.
So, we highly encourage all students to check out at least one club or athletic opportunity this year. If you haven't yet, please ask your child if he/she picked up any of the handouts over lunches this week. We've also included a list of the clubs/athletics in this newsletter along with links to the handouts for more information.
Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend!!
With love,
Rachel Rydzewski & Nancy Pasch

Assignment Notebooks
A school-wide expectation this year is that all students have and use an assignment notebook. This expectation is to model and help students with organization, planning & prioritizing, and task completion.
Students were issued an assignment notebook at the start of school. If a student forgets their assignment notebook one day, don't worry; a staff member will provide a paper copy to use. However, if a student loses their assignment notebook, they will need to purchase a new one. New assignment notebooks are available in the main office to be purchased for $5.00.

Consistent Behavior Expectations at Muskego Lakes
We wanted to share how behaviors will be handled here at Muskego Lakes. All behaviors shown on the left side of the chart below are considered “minor behaviors” and will be managed by the classroom teacher using our PBIS behavior process of:
Remind: the student will be given a reminder by the classroom teacher of the expectation
Check-In: the student and teacher will check-in with one another to problem solve together on what support the student needs to get back to meeting the expectation
Take a Break: Students will be asked to take a break from the classroom in our library and fill out a reflection sheet. A parent phone call will be made if the student needs to take a break to inform you that your student missed class and to partner to support the student.
The behaviors on the right side of this chart are considered “major behaviors” and prompt an office investigation by administration after a teacher submits an Infinite Campus referral. After the investigation is complete, these may or may not result in an office discipline referral.

6th Grade CogAt Testing Ahead on September 22nd
6th grade social studies teachers are planning on giving the CogAt on Wednesday, September 22nd. The CogAt is the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to both 3rd and
6th grade students every year. The CogAT evaluates the level and pattern of cognitive
development of students, as well as their abilities in problem solving using verbal, quantitative,
and spatial (nonverbal) reasoning. The CogAT measures developed abilities that begin at birth
and continue through early adulthood. Scores can be used to adapt instruction in ways that
enhance students’ success in learning.
Data gathered from these assessments will be included as one aspect of the multiple measures
that help staff make decisions regarding your child’s instructional needs. There is no way for
students to study or prepare for this assessment. Rather, to attain the most reliable results, we
want to foster a relaxed, natural environment in the classroom.
Results of this assessment will be shared with you following the completion of the testing and following our District’s universal screening process. The information gathered will not be used
in any calculation of report card grades since it is not directly connected to standard or skill
achievement.
Please contact Kristi Brooks, the Director of Secondary Learning, if you have any questions at kristi.brooks@muskegonorway.org.
