Melville Message Community Update

In partnership with families and community, the mission of Melville Elementary School is to provide all students with a strong academic foundation through diverse and challenging instruction in a safe and nurturing environment enabling them to achieve their greatest potential while developing self-confidence, respect, responsibility, compassion and a love of learning.

According to Rhode Island State Law 216-RICR-20-10-4, General Hearing Screening Requirements are outlined with the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) and students in preschool programs, operated by public school districts, and all students in Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third Grades and ANY student(s) new to a school without a prior record of a hearing screening must be given a hearing screening test by a property trained and qualified person in accordance with the guidelines of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHS).

Per regulations outlined above, any student who provides documentation from a parent/legal guardian that a hearing screening test has been performed in accordance with Rhode Island General Hearing Screening Requirements is exempt from this screening requirement. In the absence of this documentation from the parent/guardian, the school is required to make provisions for this screening.

Melville Elementary School will have the Rhode Island School of the Deaf Audiology Center perform this screening and this screening will be held for Preschool, Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third Grades as well as ANY student(s) new to Melville Elementary School without a prior record of a hearing screening on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.

If you do not want your child screened for hearing, please provide your documentation to the school nurse and please contact the school nurse by Monday, January 23, 2023. Otherwise your child(ren) will be screened for hearing.

2022-2023 School Calendar

We go outside as much as possible and we want our students to be warm and ready to play! Please help your children select weather appropriate clothing as we enter the colder months.

In order to publish a yearbook, then we have to have parents parent support. We currently have an incredible yearbook coordinator, but this is her last year. We need a parent or parents of children K-3 who would be able to mentor this year and lead next year!

Having a yearbook means so much to the students-please consider lending a hand. If you are interested, then please email me at lauried@portsmouthschoolsri.org.

We are excited to say that our 2023 Spring Baseball and Softball registration is now open. We have a lot of exciting things going on with the league and hope you will register early. We are still offering our family cap, sibling discount and military discounts. Early Bird registration discount will be in place until January 31st. Registration will remain open for Minors, Majors and Seniors through March 11th. Tee ball, Coach Pitch and Machine Pitch registration will be open until March 31st. These dates are to provide us with the proper amount of time to secure uniforms and other needed equipment before the season opens. We are adding a Senior division in Baseball this year (ages 13 to 16) to the league. If you are interested in volunteering or chaperoning this school year, then you will need to complete the volunteer approval process. Mrs. McEvoy in our office is a notary and can be of any assistance, so please do not hesitate to reach out!

In keeping with the spirit of giving, our Feinstein Jr. Scholars are excited to start an in-school food pantry that our students and families can donate to and access when needed.
