On Friday, January 27, GLOBE celebrated the Lunar New Year. Thank you to everyone who could join us to witness the amazing performances by our students. This Friday, February 3, is National Wear Red Day. Please invite your children to wear red to school that day — you can wear red, too! — and take this opportunity to teach them about heart disease and how it affects people young and old.

You might even tell them about our very own GLOBE first-grader Miranda Borges Ferro who was born with only half of her heart — and has already had three open-heart surgeries in her seven years.

She’s one of the 1 in 100 babies born with a congenital heart defect and one of 2-3 million people living with congenital heart disease in the United States today. Wearing red is an easy way to share your support.

Yard signs
If you volunteered to display a GLOBE yard sign, now's the time to change the 'topper' to say 'APPLY NOW'. Thank you for your support!

Lottery
Our lottery officially opened on Monday, January 30. If you are interested in enrolling a new student you must submit an application via our website, not via school choice. The lottery closes on February 17. The drawing will be held on February 28.

Intent to Return form is due this Friday!
As mentioned at the top of this newsletter, if your student will return next August for the 2023-2024 school year, please complete the 'Intent to Return' form by 12pm on February 3. You will receive a Google confirmation after submitting the document. If you have an 8th grade student who is graduating, but plan to enter his/her/their sibling in the lottery, you must also complete this form. If you have any questions, please email the admissions team.

Black History Month

Our celebration of Black History Month kicks off today! We’re looking forward to a month full of read-alouds, fun facts during morning announcements, and a culminating event.

This Friday, we’re all encouraged to wear red to recognize heart disease. On the remaining three Fridays in February, we’re asking the GLOBE community to wear red, green, yellow, black, or a Black-history themed t-shirt.

Upper Campus:

2023 Spelling Bee Championships

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, 8th grade student, Peedie Flaherty, won the DeKalb County Spelling Bee and will now represent GLOBE in the State Championship.

DeKalb Schools TV (DSTV) are broadcasting the Spelling Bee every day this week, at 7:09pm, here. Congratulations Peedie!

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

GLOBE's middle school team won 3 of their 4 rounds for a great inaugural performance. The elementary school team (4th and 5th grade) won every round and will now move on to the Metro Regional Bowl in a few weeks!

UC Spirit Week - February 13–17

Black History Month Spirit Week will take place at Upper Campus from February 13–17. The daily themes will be as follows. Monday: black, red and green, Tuesday: Living Museum Day, Wednesday: Black Out Thursday: HBCU Day (students represent their favorite Historically Black College), Friday: 'Unapologetically You' day.

Do not drop off/pick up at Shallowford Presbyterian Church

GLOBE families must not use Shallowford Presbyterian Church as a pick up/drop off location for students. This is causing considerable issues with SPC's own operations. GLOBE strongly encourages use of the Upper Campus carpool.

Spirit Night with the Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks are hosting a GLOBE PTCC Spirit Night on Saturday, March 25. Purchase your tickets at hawkspromos.com/globeacademy to earn our school $5 with each ticket purchased. Pricing options start at $27. Each ticket includes a $10 food and beverage credit.
Please also Invite friends and family to purchase tickets using the link, and let's have an awesome Spirit night! We won't be able to guarantee or hold tickets for GLOBE families after February 6, so make sure you buy your ticket by then!

Field Day Planning!

Calling UC parents! Field Day happens every year in May, but it cannot happen without parent involvement. If you are interested in helping by being a Lead/Co-Lead for the UC Field Day for 4th and 5th grade students, please reach out to Fred and Emily at classpac.globeacademy@gmail.com.

Used Uniforms - First Friday of the Month - Returns in March

We are thankful for all the donations we have received from GLOBE families. We are in the process of sorting items to prepare for a used uniforms pop-up sale this Spring. We will not be collecting items this Friday, but we will return on the first Friday in March.

The order deadline is February 14. This is when we set our copy counts. Don’t miss out. Order NOW by clicking here. Please remember that although it says Upper Campus, there is only one yearbook for the entire school.

GLOBE Summer Camp will take place during the weeks of June 12, June 19 and June 26.
