TUMUAKI TALK
Kia ora Mahora whānau
It’s really exciting to be back and especially under the ORANGE setting! It was fantastic to see whānau back on day 1 and in and around school. Thank you to our whānau for the way you have followed the Covid 19 guidelines so well...your support has made such a difference and continues to be appreciated.
Kanohi ki te Kanohi...face to face...as we all know, this is always the preferred way of meeting and we have been unable to do this for some time. We really value connecting with you and are excited about the Piki Haere Hui (parent interviews) next week. I really encourage you to book a time that suits your whanau and come along and korero with your child's class teacher/s. A reminder that school closes at 12:00pm on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May for these hui. Please ensure all children are collected at this time on both days. If you have any queries, please give Chanelle or Kirsten a call in the office or contact your child's teacher...they can all help.
I was recently approached about sharing information from Hastings District Council to support developing a Mahora Community Plan. They have scheduled one meeting for this, on a Saturday afternoon (see details in this newsletter). This is a really important opportunity for us to have a say around our whenua and our community. I have also asked them to be on site on Wednesday 11 May during Piki Haere Hui, so more of our community have the opportunity to have a discussion and for you to share your ideas and aspirations for the wider Mahora Community. They will be set up outside our Hui Room (beside the new alleyway between Rooms 6 and 7) from 1:00pm - 4:00pm, so please feel free to call in and share your ideas...they need to hear from us! So that you can have a discussion in your family, some of the questions they will ask include -
What do you love about Mahora?
What do you think can be improved?
How can you help to make these improvements
This is all focussed on the wider Mahora community.
Remember to keep an eye on our 4 main communication platforms. They are; the Mahora School App, our school Facebook page (Week 1 photos coming soon), Emails from the office and your class Seesaw page. If you need assistance with any of these platforms, please call in and see us, we are happy to help.
And to all our wonderful Mothers out there...Hari rā Māmā...Happy Mothers Day for Sunday, you are all amazing!
Ngā mihi,
Rohan.
AKO IN ACTION
Kuwi’s Huhu Hunt
We have some wonderful artists in Mānuka Hub. They were reading the story Kuwi’s Huhu Hunt and thought that they would give drawing a huhu grub a go. They used pastels to learn how to shade and use all the space. They look super awesome up on their wall.
Exploration Stations in Karaka
Check out the across curriculum range of learning activities that Karaka Hub tamariki have been busy with this week. They have been looking at healthy food options and using their maths skills to work out the cost of their meal at a cafe, making Marae and learning about the different parts and some movement skills to increase their agility. It is great to see our tamariki so engaged and using their mahi tahi (working together) skills.
Hippity Hop
A wonderful Easter Bunny visited Mahora on the final day of Term 1 and we had some super excited tamariki. We hope you all enjoyed your long Easter weekend and managed to have some quality whānau time.
HĀKINAKINA AND MUSIC
Our Winter sports team practices are underway, uniforms are organised and our tamariki are excited to get into their different competitions.
Year 5 & 6 CANOE POLO starts this Sunday 8 May at Clive Pools.

Year 5 & 6 MINIBALL starts next Tuesday 10 May at the Hastings Sports Centre.
In addition to these season sports, the one day Rippa Rugby Tournaments are next week. Year 3 & 4 on Wednesday 11 May and Year 5 & 6 on Thursday 12 May. Both these groups will have brought home a notice today with teams and organisation for the day. Please read through, as there is a lot going on with Whānau hui scheduled for those days as well.
The Barefoot 7s tackle Rugby tournament scheduled to be played on Thursday 19 May has been postponed to Term 3, Thursday 1 September.
A sporting OPPORTUNITY for our young Year 0, 1 and 2 Tamariki is coming up starting in Week 6, on Friday afternoons. Our young tamariki can join in the fabulous HOCKEY FUNSTICKS programme run by Hawke’s Bay Hockey. A note will come out to all of Kākano early next week with details. With our very own turf at Mahora now, we anticipate the number of keen hockey players will grow. The funsticks programme is a great way to start. Keep an eye out for the note on Monday.
FUN TIMES AT LUNCHTIME TODAY….Kaiako took on the Tamariki at dodgeball. This has been our first Kaiako vs Tamariki sport challenge for a long time and it was awesome! Photos didn't do it justice, but check out the video on our school Facebook page.
OTHER KŌRERO
Black Caps
Look what has arrived! Such excitement around the Senior School today. The ceremony will take place next week on Friday 13 May at 11:15am and whānau are invited, in keeping with orange restrictions which means wearing masks, of course. This will be a whole school event and the first time we will be able to come together for a celebration. We look forward to sharing and celebrating with you.
Ka kite koe hei te Paraire. See you next Friday.
Mahora School PTA
Have you got some amazing fundraising ideas?
Have you got some time to help?
Why don't you join the Mahora PTA!
We are looking for whānau to join our PTA to help our kura and our tamariki. Our PTA meet once or twice a term and there’s food, drinks and some awesome conversations. The money we raise helps towards extra resources like the junior playground, the basketball hoops, books, money towards camp and Black Caps. We help where we can.
We would love to invite you to our next hui at 7:00pm on Monday 16 May 2022.
