This past Thursday, we share in a celebration of Ms. Kathleen Barnes' deployment with Active Duty in the US Army National Guard. We are all so proud of her willingness to serve in multiple ways. "I didn't realize this until watching the video last night on FB, but we did a lot more than recognize an individual yesterday. We taught all who were present a lesson on selfless service, duty, patriotism and kindness. And we did it with experiential learning, not by lecture. They were a part of it...yelling, clapping, singing, crying. Much more memorable when the emotions are engaged. Needless to say, I don't get that reaction during my lessons on Newton's laws and the physics of flight."

A voter registration drive will be held on Tuesday, October 4 and Wednesday, October 5. See the announcement below. Please help spread the word among eligible voters among our student body and staff.

If you would like to come register to vote in person, a table will be set up near the cafeteria before school and after second block. Make sure to bring your drivers license and social security number. If you plan to vote in the November General Election and you haven’t yet registered to do so, please visit www.scvotes.gov by Oct. 7. You can use this site for registration, but also to find your polling location, obtain a sample ballot, or learn more about absentee voting.

Under a new law passed earlier this year, you will be able to access early voting opportunities prior to the actual Nov. 8 election day. Voters can vote in person any time from 8:30 AM - 6 PM on weekdays and Saturdays at an early voting center in their county of residence, beginning Oct. 24. You must present a photo ID or your voter registration card. Early voting center sites in Greenville include:

On Election Day, Greenville County will have 144 precincts open from 7 AM – 7 PM.

College App Day will be next Friday, October 7, 2022 from 8:45 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the media center. Students are signing up for 45 minute sessions. We are asking staff, teachers, and students to wear their favorite college shirts on Friday. It should be a fun and exciting time!

Is your senior graduating in 2023? Have they taken their senior portraits for the yearbook?

ON CAMPUS makeups for senior portraits will be Friday, October 14th. Time slots are limited.

IN STUDIO appointments are also available until October 7. Time slots vary.

Wade Hampton High School PTSA and SIC are proud to announce that they will be hosting an evening with the Area 20 & 22 candidates for Greenville County School Board. Senior IGP meetings will begin on Sept. 29th and run through mid-October. Students were given their invitation letters on Tuesday, Sept. 20th with the date and time of their meeting. A Backpack notice was also sent out via email to inform senior parents that invitation letters have been given to students. Students will attend in person in their counselor's office and parents will be invited to join virtually using the school counselor's individual Zoom link that will be posted on the School Counseling Website. We hope this will be a convenient option for parents who are working during the day. If you have any questions, please reach out to your student's school counselor.

Juniors! It is time to order your authentic class ring! Representatives from Herff Jones will be at WHHS on Wednesday, September 28th during all lunches to take class ring orders. Down payments are $80 and can be made by cash, check, money order or credit card. Any senior who has not ordered their class ring may do so at this time. Extra ring packets available in the front office.

The SCDE recently updated the criteria for students to earn Seals of Distinction. “The Seals of Distinction" criteria have been updated for the 2022-23 academic year. This updated criteria will begin with the spring graduating class of 2023.

The following are links to the September 2022 Seals of Distinction Template and a document summarizing the changes. “The official 2022-23 Seals of Distinction Overview and Guidelines document will be available soon. A Spanish translation of the September 2022 Seals of Distinction Template will also be available.” Once these documents are sent to us by the SCDE, we will make them available to you.

We are excited to once again support the GCS Foundation Golf Tournament. It is designed to provide college scholarships for deserving GCS students. At least half of each year’s scholarship recipients are children of GCS employees.

Our school will participate in this year's tournament held on Monday, October 17, 2022 at Topgolf.

Your help is needed to solicit sponsors, both within our school and in our community. I am asking for help in securing sponsors (multiple levels of sponsorships). APPLY NOW! GCS high school students who are interested in a paid work opportunity in one of Greenville’s high-demand occupations are invited to apply for a LaunchGVL Internship. LaunchGVL is a partnership between Greenville Chamber and Greenville County Schools that is creating a talent pipeline and helping to fill the jobs of the future. The application deadline for a Fall internship is September 23, 2022.

Of course, it takes more than membership dues to make all this happen.

In addition to your membership, please consider becoming a “Friend of the Generals” by donating $10, $25, or $50 to PTA where 100% of your donation will go directly to support WHHS students and staff. You can find the tab to make this tax-deductible donation also on the link above.

All seniors who are applying to colleges and need their official transcripts sent to the colleges must enter the request in Schoolinks by setting up their college application manager. An informative flyer that includes instructions and useful links to do this can be accessed by clicking HERE.

All grade level students are able to download their own transcripts for the purposes of: viewing their most current high school credits, GPA, and class rank, uploading them to colleges that accept student transcript uploads, scholarship applications, etc. Once students log into their Schoolinks account, they simply need to click on the apple icon along the left side of the page that reads "School", then "Transcript Request". They then have the option to "Get unofficial transcript" or "Send official transcript.

We would like to make you aware of several updates regarding food services this school year.

• USDA is no longer providing free LUNCH meals for all students.
• All students in Greenville County Schools will continue to receive FREE BREASKFAST, regardless of the student’s meal status.
  
• Online Free and Reduced Meal applications are available now and can be accessed through the FANS website.
• Students will receive Paper Free and Reduced Meal applications during the 1st week of school.
• The Free and Reduced Priced Meal carry over period for the 22-23 School Year will end on 9/26/2022
• The carry over period is the amount of time students are allowed to remain on this year’s meal status
• This time period allows sufficient time for parents to complete Free and Reduced Priced Meal applications for the current year.
• Regular school meals will be provided to all High School students from 8/15/22 to 9/2/22, regardless of their account balance
• Students may accrue $20 worth of meal charges.
• Beginning 9/5/22 funds will be required to purchase meals for students on full paid meal status with negative account balances in excess of $20

Student Drop Off and Pick Up--In the interest of safety and efficiency please only drop-off and pick-up your students in our designated car loop located off of Pine Knoll Drive. All other areas on our campus such as the student and teacher parking lots, the bus loop, and the side of the road are considered “Off Limits” for drop-off and pick-up purposes.

Also, our business neighbors in the surrounding community have reached out to us with concerns about student drop-off, pick-up, and student parking in their parking lots. In order to better serve their customers and cut-down on unnecessary traffic, they have informed us that they will begin ticketing, towing, and/or issuing trespassing notices to individuals who continue to pick-up and drop-off students on their property. Please know that we have no authority over these areas. I want to make sure you are aware of these potential actions.

We are still studying and looking at ways to improve our afternoon pick up practices. Until we are able to implement a long term practice, please adhere to the current practices outlined below.

DO

• Pull as close as possible to the crosswalk near the fine arts center. This will maximize the number of cars that can drop off at any given time.
• Drop off your student only in the lane closest to the curb.
• Respect the WHHS Faculty and Staff Members that are directing traffic
• Use the visitor spaces for parking when going inside the building

DO NOT

• Drop off/Pick up in the Staff Parking Area.
• Drop off/Pick up along Pine Knoll Drive
• Drop off/Pick up in the Student parking lot
