Welcome Back, 'Billies!
We had a blast welcoming our students back to school last week. It was great to see smiles and excitement as our halls filled once again. Thanks to all of our staff members who ensured students found their classrooms, had everything they needed, and were prepared to start strong.
Best of luck to everyone for a happy, successful school year!
Message from Dr. Zilliox
Hello Fredonia School Community,
I hope this message finds you well and ready for the 2022-23 school year. We have had a great opening of school and want to thank all those involved for their preparation leading up to our first day with students. It is great to have our hallways filled with students again and our fall sports season in full swing.
As we met with both students and adults to begin the year, we reemphasized our district mission, vision, and core belief statements. They include the following:
Mission
A place of learning and exploring where individuals become their greatest selves.
Vision
Paving innovative pathways to dynamic and global educational experiences.
Core Beliefs
Student-focused: We make students our top priority and the center of our decision-making.
Respect: We honor and treat everyone fairly.
Integrity: We believe in honesty and trustworthiness.
Inclusivity: We provide a sense of belonging and support for all individuals.
Diversity: We believe every voice has value, and our differences make us stronger.
Excellence: We work hard, set high standards, and take pride in our efforts.
Communication: We practice consistent and timely communication with positive intent.
Resilience: We foster growth and perseverance to help each other overcome adversity.
This year we are paying particular attention to our vision statement, which outlines what we aspire to be as a school district. In doing so, we are asking everyone to consider how they can be innovative, dynamic, and global in their approach to learning. We are further encouraging everyone to set a goal to move forward in these areas.
In terms of our core beliefs, communication is also a focus area for this school year. First, we are emphasizing communication with positive intent among all members of our school community. The concept is that we communicate from a positive perspective while connecting with others based on kindness and compassion, even in difficult circumstances. Second, we are looking to enhance our communication between the district and the larger community with the redesign of our district website and the addition of a mobile app. These tools will help parents, guardians, students, and staff to find relevant information more quickly and easily, and in their preferred language. To download the app, simply search “Fredonia CSD” in the app store on your phone.
Please join us in making these attributes part of our daily routine as we work together for the greater good. Thanks in advance for your efforts to support these initiatives throughout the school year.
As always, reach out any time with questions, concerns, or ideas. We are here to offer help and support as needed.
Respectfully,
Brad Zilliox
Download the FCSD app!
Don't forget to download our FCSD app - you'll find useful things like lunch menus, an event calendar, staff contact info, our social feed, and optional push notifications. Keep up to date with what's going on in our district!
9/11 Tribute by our FHS National Honor Society
As we remember and honor the victims and heroes of 9/11, we thank our FHS National Honor Society for placing an American Flag for each of the 2799 victims in our lawn. It is a moving tribute and rememberance for those lives lost 21 years ago.
Please welcome Rotary exchange student Raissa Carmelo from Brazil!
FHS is excited to welcome and host Raissa Carmelo as a Rotary exchange student from Brazil! Raissa is a junior and is currently participating in the volleyball team and is looking forward to joining ski club this winter. Please make sure to say hello to Raissa and make her feel welcome at FHS!
We are still actively and eagerly looking for additional host families for winter and spring of this school year. If you are interested in learning more, please email Diane Hannum at defhannum@gmail.com.
Reading Gives You Wings
In the past few days the Elementary Response to Intervention (RtI) teachers have been fluttering to classrooms kicking off our Accelerated Reader (AR) theme for the 2022-2023 school year. Thanks to our RtI teachers and all of our staff who help our students get excited about reading every day. #readinggivesyouwings
It's also National Library Card Sign Up month - don't forget to use your number one community resource...the library!
Coach Bertrando Receives Section IV Award
Congratulations to Fredonia boys basketball coach Nick Bertrando on receiving the Coach's Sportsmanship Award for the CCAA at the Section IV recognition dinner recently! Thank you Nick for everything you do for our student athletes.
School Lunch Pricing
Don't forget - the federal government did not extend free school lunches into this school year. Our school lunch prices and paperwork to apply for free or reduced lunch assistance can be found on our website at the link below.
Thanks to everyone who participated in our first Bills Day! More fun to come!
Summer Orchestra Camp
Over the summer, Mrs. Goff and Mrs. Terreri led 5-8th graders in a very successful orchestra camp experience. It was a blast for all involved and a great way to re-energize for the school year!
Forever Grateful, Forever a Hillbilly
This past weekend during the Red, White, & Blues festival, Jenn Suhr, our hometown Olympic medalist, was honored in Barker Commons. Check out the Observer article below for a great story. Jenn tagged the district on her Twitter, saying: "A weekend to remember. I will never be able to find the words to express how much my community has meant to me through the years. Forever grateful...forever a @FredoniaCSD Hillbilly". She also wrote more on her Facebook page about her time growing up in Fredonia.
Congratulations Jenn, we are so proud!
