Family Newsletter
October 2, 2020
A Note from Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
Thank you to the parents and staff members of the Hyde-Addison ES Equity and Anti-Racism Task Force, who curated a wonderful newsletter for our school community. There are numerous resource options, reading suggestions for adults and students, discussion opportunities, celebrations and more. There are also ways to connect, if you would like to learn more about the Equity and Anti-Racism Task force or to join. For those who have not had an opportunity to review the newsletter, a link is available, under "News and Updates".
In addition, please use the link below, to access the DCPS “Netiquette” for Students and Families. This includes reminders on classroom-ready clothing, readiness for learning, backgrounds, adult interruptions of instruction, access to healthy meals, technology support and other resources.
Please keep you and your loved ones safe. For resources and information about the District of Columbia Government’s coronavirus (COVID-19) response and recovery efforts, please visit coronavirus.dc.gov. Please visit dcpsreopenstrong.com or backtoschool.dc.gov for DCPS virtual learning resources.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal
Hyde-Addison Elementary Schools

Meet Our Chicks and Get Ready to Plant!
Make sure your child tunes into this Wednesday's Virtual Field Trip to meet the adorable new members of our community. Also, have the soil and seeds from your child's science kit ready to go as we will be planting. If you didn't get a science kit, any soil and seeds will work.
All Wonderful Wednesday links are on the Hyde-Addison Resource Hub via your child's Canvas.
Parent Teacher Conferences
NEW! Grades and Progress Reports in K-5
This will look slightly different at the beginning of the year since the majority of our data is from Beginning of Year (BOY) assessments which do not reflect student growth after instruction has been provided.
If your child's BOY assessment data indicates that, by the end of Advisory 1, they will still be approaching grade level standards then you will be emailed a BOY Data Report before your scheduled Parent Teacher Conference.
- Families who are emailed a BOY Data Report are asked to digitally sign or type their name on the signature line of the document and email it back to their child's teacher. If you are unable to do that, you can confirm receipt by email. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more at your scheduled parent teacher conference.
- If you do not receive an emailed BOY Data Report, your child's BOY data indicated they will meet grade level standards by the end of the Advisory.
We understand these are unprecedented circumstances and many students are currently approaching the standard for their grade level. We recognize that everyone in our community is doing their best and believe that that proactive, transparent communication about students' academic progress will only help us form stronger parent-teacher partnerships.
DCPS Grades
4 = exceeds the standard (Advanced).
3 = meets the standard (Proficient).
2 = approaches the standard (Basic).
1 = does not meet the standard (Below Basic).
Living Through History Cornerstone
Your child has experienced a DCPS Cornerstone called Living Through History. During this Cornerstone, your child has become a global citizen by documenting, sharing, advocating, and reflecting on their personal experiences during the pandemic and at this time of increased awareness and response to racial injustice. As a culminating task for this Cornerstone, your child will:
- Create a virtual time capsule from their own experience during COVID-19, stay at home order, racial injustice and the Black Lives Matter movement, or other experiences they find meaningful to them.
- Create class time capsules in grades PK-5 (teachers will select the items students publish)
- Showcase their work across their school community, DCPS, and for some on the Smithsonian Learning Lab's website.
What you should know:
- Time capsules will be showcased on the Smithsonian Learning Lab's website https://learninglab.si.edu/dcps and will be visible to the public
- The Smithsonian will not use the time capsules in any other manner, including publishing the time capsules on another website or using them for advertisements or any other commercial purpose.
- DCPS will host a virtual event to celebrate student work in October. More information will be shared later.
How can you participate?
- Complete the Family Engagement Activities designed to support this Cornerstone. Resources can be found on the DCPS parent canvas page.
- Talk with your child about the role of citizens and youth in advising the government. Ask: What role do you think young citizens should have in helping the government make good decisions?
- Visit the Smithsonian's Learning Lab https://learninglab.si.edu/dcps
- Join us for the virtual showcase in October to see your child's work, along with the work of other students across DCPS
- Complete the Parent Consent Form which allows your child to share his/her virtual time capsule with the Smithsonian Learning Lab solely for publication on the Smithsonian Learning Lab's website. All parent consent forms should be emailed to the teacher.
2-5 Math Update! Asynchronous Assignment on Wednesdays
To ensure that we don't lose valuable math instruction, 2-5 students will have an asynchronous math lesson on Wednesdays. This instruction is important!
To access their lesson, they will go to Clever and click on the "Great Minds Eureka InSync" app. Through the app, they will be able to watch a Great Minds instructor teach the lesson. Students will submit their problem set and/or exit ticket with guidance from the teacher.
Do you hear a chirping sound?
Learn more about how to do this or reach out to Ms. McLaurin for support or resources, if needed.

Immunization Information for Families (OSSE)
Schools are required to verify every student’s immunization compliance as part of enrollment and attendance. PTA ANNOUNCEMENTS
Volunteer Corner
Are you interested in helping to promote community at Hyde in some very difficult circumstances? Consider volunteering. The PTA is looking for volunteers to:
- Serve as “buddy” families to families new to the school.
- Brainstorm fundraising ideas for the COVID context during a meeting this coming Sunday at 3 pm. Information is in Konstella.
- Be a back-up administrator for the PTA’s new family communications platform, Konstella.
- Organize a ward 2 Board of Education candidate forum. Only a portion of Hyde parents are ward 2 voters, but all our students will be impacted by any enacted recommendations from this Board. This forum could take a different format depending on the volunteer’s preference - an organized debate or a series of Zooms with each candidate; just for the Hyde community or partnering with other schools.
- Parents of 3rd or 4th graders? Interested in serving as a room parent? We are still in need of support for both these grades.
- Up for a longer-term commitment? The position of PTA Vice President is now vacant.
If you are interested in any of the above, contact the PTA at pta.hydeaddison@gmail.com.
----Reminder: PTA meetings will be the fourth Tuesday of the month at 5 pm.----
