Fundraising by Spanish Students to Aid Puerto Rico

The AP Spanish class and the Advanced Spanish Studies class conduct fundraising efforts to aid people in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is still recovering from Hurricane Maria five years ago. This past Monday, Puerto Rico was hit by another Hurricane named Fiona. Power outages and destruction damaged the whole island. Let's show our support by contributing to our collection jars. They are located in Maestra O´Neill Classroom 234, Maestra Megyesi Room 107, Mr. Villanueva´s classroom, Mrs. Justice Sullivan classroom, Mrs. Gravel classroom and there is one at the library with Ms. Piccoli. The collection jars will be in those classrooms until Tuesday, September 27th, 2022.

All money will be donated to our fellow citizens from Puerto Rico. Our point of contact is photographer Juan Carlos who was born in Puerto Rico and lives in Woodstock. Bio below.

On Tuesday, September 20th, Bob Stocker from the Greater Upper Valley Trout Unlimited (GUVTU) visited Ms. Hagge's English III class to talk with students about fly fishing. This class is reading Norman Maclean's A River Runs Through It, and Mr. Stocker brought a collection of fly fishing rods, including a bamboo rod from the time period of the book, to show the students. He provided a demonstration of fly casting, and a couple of students gave casting a try. Mr. Stocker shared that he began fly fishing and making his own rods after seeing the movie version of A River Runs Through It. In addition to conveying his passion for fly fishing, Mr. Stocker also spoke about his work with Project Healing Waters, an organization that helps wounded military service veterans experience the healing powers of fly fishing. Another member of GUVTU, Dave Eastman, will be visiting Ms. Hagge's block 7 English III class on Tuesday, September 27th. Thank you to Kat Robbins for helping us make a connection with these inspiring volunteers!

CRAFT Update!

In SAP (Stewardship Action Project) students have created their own definition of stewardship, by developing action project ideas and help with stewardship actions on our campus like planting these American Chestnut Trees to help a non-profit bring this species back to our forests.

SAP students are also helping to grow and harvest Abenaki red flint corn and cranberry beans as part of the Abenaki Land Link Project which helps to cultivate heirloom Abenaki seeds to give back to the indigenous community to continue growing their native crops in the future.

Students in Foundations of Agriculture have been focused on harvesting, weighing and processing the many crops in our garden like beets (40 lbs), carrots (40 lbs), basil (3.8 lbs), kale (15 lbs), butternut squash (70.6 lbs), spaghetti squash (50.75 lbs), garlic, onions, pumpkins and herbs. We have sent most of that food to the cafeteria while some of it is waiting to cure. We have also cooked with our produce making herbed garlic bread and kale basil pesto. YUM! FA students have also been testing our soil to see what nutrients are needed in the garden, growing microgreens for our cafeteria and starting seeds for our hydroponic system.

In our middle school class, Gardens and Greenhouses, students have been learning about the medicinal, edible and ecological benefits of cultivated and wild plants, the features and processes of plants, and how to grow and use herbs. They got to make and eat parmesan roasted carrots with thai basil, roasted beets and kale chips using the local food from our gardens!

Thanks to some of our students noticing our huge sunflower in the garden, we entered this sunflower head in the 150th Tunbridge Fair, tying for 1 st place with a diameter of 1’ 6”. FFA students went on their first field of the year to the Tunbridge Fair after earning funds from their bake sales last year.

7th & 8th Grade Students - You're Invited to Join the Junior Math Team!

Hello 7th and 8th grade students!

You are invited to join the Junior Math team! Here is information about our team:

WUHSMS is a member of the Twin State Math League (TSML) which is comprised of 14 area schools. Below is information regarding our upcoming season.

  • The team is open to all students in 7th and 8th grade.

  • We attend 4 meets during the regular season. Students are bused to and from the meets. We depart around 2:15 pm and return approximately 6:15 pm.

  • Host schools provide a slice of pizza and a cookie during the meets, but students should also bring their own snack and drink to supplement :) .

  • An all-star meet is held in May, location to be determined, during the morning of a school day. Top 4 scorers from each team are invited to compete.

  • Team points, as well as individual points, are tracked.

  • We practice once a week with questions from previous years’ meets so that you are well-prepared. Once we get our team together we will find a practice time that works best. In the past we’ve met once-a-week during lunchtime.

Radium Girls by D.W. Gregory

Join the Yoh Theatre cast and crew on October 14 and 15 at 7 pm in the Yoh auditorium for the play The Radium Girls, by D.W.Gregory.

“Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Called a “powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, Radium Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece which offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science.”

This is a one-hour show. More information about tickets coming soon!
