AP Exams 2021-2022
Why should I take the AP exam?
The AP exam is an opportunity to earn college credit and/or advancement. College courses are expensive, sometimes costing over $5,000 per class. By earning AP credit, you could save thousands of dollars in college tuition. Some colleges also offer “advancement”, which means you could enter higher-level classes by skipping introductory courses. In addition, the AP exam is a good way to get some honest feedback on how prepared you are for college-level work.
How many colleges grant credit for successful completion of AP exams?
Over 90% of the colleges and universities in the United States and Canada take part in the AP program. Colleges have guidelines and requirements that dictate when AP credit is earned based on the 5 point scale (see below). Many institutions accept minimum grades of either 3, 4 or 5. For example, UConn requires a 4 for all exams except Calc BC (3). For information on AP Credit Policy, log on to: www.collegeboard.com/ap/creditpolicy
Fees:
The fee for each exam is $96.00. This is a $1 per exam increase for the 2022 AP Exams from last year.
**Checks must be made payable to: Lyman Memorial High School. All fees are due to Mr. DeCarli in ROOM 206 by the end of the day on Friday, November 5, 2021.**
Fee reductions are available for students with financial need. Please see Mr. DeCarli as soon as possible if you believe you may qualify for a fee reduction.
If your child decides not to take the exam after November 5th, 2021, there is no refund. If your child decides they want to take the exam after November 5th, 2021, a late fee of $40 will be assessed to the regular cost of the exam, totaling $136.00.
Scoring:
- Grading is reported on a 5 point scale:
5-Extremely well qualified
4-Well qualified
3-Qualified
2-Possibly
1-No Recommendation
Students can view their AP scores online at apscore.org beginning in early July using their ID number, their collegeboard account and instructions included in the AP student packs, which will be distributed to students at their last AP exam this year. You are not required to designate a college at the time of the exam but a fee is charged for each report sent thereafter.
If you want to withhold a grade from a college score report, there is a fee and a request must be received in writing by June 11. There is no fee for grade cancellation (permanent deletion). Info on grade withholding/cancellation will be included in the student pack.
If I don’t know the answer to an exam question, should I guess?
Total scores on the multiple-choice section will be based only on the number of questions answered correctly. Points will not be deducted for incorrect answers.
Things you should bring to the exam:
Several No.2 pencils (sharpened with erasers), Black/ Dark Blue ballpoint pens for free-response sections, a watch that does not beep, an approved calculator if you are taking Bio, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics or Stats, a ruler for the Physics exam, your social security number for exam identification purposes, and your secondary school code number (070340).
Things you should not bring to the exam:
Do not bring books, correction fluid, compasses, highlighters, notes, scrap paper, rulers or calculators (except as noted above), portable audio devices, photographic equipment, cell phones, devices that can access the internet, electronic communication devices, food, drinks, or clothing with subject related information.
Anyone who does not comply with the guidelines and/or rules will be asked to return his or her exam materials. A detailed explanation can be found in the AP Bulletin for Students and Parents distributed earlier in the year. A few examples are:
Attempting to remove exam materials from the room. (On paper, electronically or any other way.)
Giving or receiving help during the exam.
Disrupting other students.
Looking or working on a section of the exam before being told to begin.
Most of the examinations take 4 – 4½ hours. Students taking an AP exam are not required to attend classes on the same day of the exam. Depending on your exam schedule, you may need to arrange for transportation to or from Lyman on the day of the exam. You may also need to resolve conflicts in your schedule such as athletic events or employment. Students will be dismissed as a class. Finishing early does not entitle you to leave early. Alternative test dates will only be granted in cases of conflict or extreme hardship. An additional fee of $40 may apply for students testing on alternative dates.
