WHPE Update November, 2020
"Reach Everyone"
Greetings Everyone,
It’s been a busy nine days since I became president of Wisconsin Health and Physical Education. The hustle and bustle is exciting as WHPE blazes a trail into the future. As President-Elect, I developed a list of initiatives I wanted to implement in the next two years. Those initiatives were planned for a “normal” year. As we all have done with our teaching, we adapt and adjust and move forward. So will WHPE!
Theme
My theme for the next two years is Reach Everyone. I selected this theme because it represents what we do and what we need to do. We need to reach all our students in our teaching regardless of circumstances. Within WHPE, we need to reach our members with professional development and advocacy. Although these are part of our Strategic Plan and obviously important, I believe one of the most important things WHPE needs to do is reach its members with a feeling of importance and belonging.
It's About Our Members
WHPE is an organization of its members. It’s about you. Without you, there is no WHPE. You are the folks that make this one of the best state associations in the country. You can help keep WHPE one of the best by responding to my calls for input in the Accolades and Strategic Plan sections below. You may think your one voice doesn’t matter, but it does, just like your vote.
Reaching Out
During my time as president, I will reach out to a different member each week just to say hi. I ask you to reach out, also. Reach out to your district coordinator or division vice-president and share a thought or idea. Or, just say hi. They would love to hear from you.
Best wishes to all. Have a safe and enjoyable November.
Dan Timm
WHPE President
Reach Everyone
Vote
Tomorrow, November 3, is Election Day. If you have not already voted, please be sure to vote tomorrow. Besides the national election for president, there are state and local races on the ballot, plus numerous school district issues to be decided. Your vote may be one vote, but when all votes are put together, they add up to a powerful message.
Accolades Column
A new column for WHPE members will be initiated in the Winter Newsletter with the first Accolades column. This is a column for members to receive a hearty congratulations and pat-on-the-back from WHPE for a recent professional honor or recognition. I know you are doing great things. Let us recognize you. Did you receive an honor or recognition from your school district for teaching, coaching, mentoring, or service? What about work you have done in the community? Did your students receive recognition in which you played an instrumental role? These are just some examples. Please send your professional accomplishment to Nicole Popowich at npopowich@uwlax.edu by December 1. We really want to hear what you have done.
Congratulations Tim Mueller and Erin School Students
Pitted against 15 teams of students in a national competition, Middle School Vice President Tim Mueller’s Fuel Up to Play 60 students won a $1,000 grant to repair and update the town hall athletic fields to promote active and healthy living in their community. Congratulations students for your leadership and passion for keeping your community healthy! A big shout-out to Fuel Up to Play 60 and GenYouth for providing this empowering leadership opportunity through the AdVenture Capital Innovation Experience presented by the Arby’s Foundation..
Professional Development
Two professional development sessions are coming your way this month. On Wednesday, November 4 at 7:00 pm, NBCT Advisor Sandee Ortiz and Southeast District Coordinator Matt Pomeroy will be hosting a ZOOM Roundtable with WHPE members who are National Board Certified. This session has three objectives: (a) making the process of pursuing National Board certification a reality, (b) learning from individuals who are National Board Certified, and (c) how being National Board Certified can help you reach every one of your students.
On Wednesday, November 18 at 7:00 pm, Matt Pomeroy and Northwest District Coordinator Molly Dado will host a ZOOM Roundtable on Pandemic HPE, discussing various teaching modalities. Join in and share your challenges and successes.
Health.Moves.Minds/Game-On
Have you signed up for a Health.Moves.Minds or Game-On fundraiser, yet? Even if you are teaching remotely, now is a good time to fundraise and donate some of the proceeds to a local charity. WHPE also receives a portion of the funds raised. Take a look at this video comparing the programs https://youtu.be/1HXMXNnudKM Contact Katie Mulloy katie.mulloy@nbexcellence.org with any questions about either program.
2020-2021 Board of Directors
Congratulations to the 2020-2021 Board of Directors! Thank you for your willingness to serve WHPE. Your ideas and energy are greatly appreciated. Visit the Leadership Page on the WHPE web site at http://whpe.us/officers to meet this year’s Board. Reach out to any Board member to share your thoughts.
Equity/diversity/Inclusion Statement
We received feedback regarding our Equity/Diversity/Inclusion statement and have incorporated those ideas into the statement. Thank you to those who shared their thoughts. Strategic Plan
WHPE’s strategic plan guides the operation of the organization. Our current strategic plan runs through 2020. One of the items that will be on the agenda for the December Board of Directors Meeting will be to develop a strategic plan for the next several years. To help with this process, I am asking for input from our members. Please review our current strategic plan at http://whpe.us/strategic-plan and let me know your thoughts. What parts of the plan should be continued, what parts should be changed, what new items should be added? Send your thoughts to me at dtimm@education.wisc.edu Your input is important.
Convention
The WHPE Convention is currently scheduled for March 24-26 at the Wilderness Resort/Glacier Canyon Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells. We hope we can meet face-to-face, but honestly, we don’t know. The Board of Directors will be making a decision at its December meeting regarding how we will proceed with convention. Currently, it appears there are three options: face-to-face like we had been doing, a number of smaller gatherings similar to district conventions of the past, or a virtual convention. We will be monitoring the COVID situation in the state and the prognosis for spring when we make a decision in December.
