Essays That Admissions Officers are Tired of Reading
"Admissions officers review hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of applications in an application season.
This makes it hard to stand out via a transcript or list of extracurriculars. The application essay — sometimes called the personal statement — can be an applicant’s main shot at showcasing their personality and grabbing the admissions officer’s attention. Selecting the right essay topic is important, and it can be tough to know where to start. In this list, admissions officers reveal the types of essays that have been overused." Interested in Pursuing a Career in Law? Check Out This Opportunity!
A Michigan Supreme Court Oral Argument will be taking place in Flint on October 18. Established in 2007, this exceptional program is designed to offer high school students a deep insight into Michigan's judicial system and the workings of the appellate courts. As part of this immersive experience, students will have the unique opportunity to engage with local attorneys, discussing the case that the Court will be hearing during the oral argument. Following the argument, there will be a debriefing session with the presenting attorneys, along with an exclusive chance for the students to interact with the esteemed justices themselves. You can also watch previous programs from April 2023 and April 2022. If you're interested in attending this event, stop by the counseling and see Mrs. Grady for more details.
Profiles in Courage Essay Contest
In Profiles in Courage, John F. Kennedy recounted the stories of eight U.S. senators who risked their careers to do what was right for the nation. These leaders demonstrated political courage by taking a stand for the public good in spite of pressure by interest groups, their political party, or even their constituents. The Profile in Courage Essay Contest challenges students to write an original and creative essay that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage.
The maximum word count is 1,000 with a minimum of 700, not including citations and bibliography. Use at least five varied sources such as government documents, letters, newspaper articles, books, and/or personal interviews.
All submissions must adhere to contest requirements.
The contest deadline is January 12, 2024. CLICK HERE FOR MORE CONTEST DETAILS

Positivity Project
Open-Mindedness
Open-mindedness is the willingness to actively search for evidence that goes against one’s favored opinions, plans, or goals. Open-minded individuals are able to weigh all evidence fairly, when it is available. They see the other side and fight the tendency to have a bias for their own views. And, rather than favoring the socially dominant views, they give attention to those that are less dominant.
Open-minded individuals are often good listeners and called upon to provide a balanced viewpoint. Both listening and the ability to deliver reasonable and practical advice are marks of good friends and confidantes. This strength helps individuals form meaningful and lasting relationships.
