5th Grade Science with Mr. McIntosh
Looking Back -
What a great start to our new year of science! Clearly, we could spend most of the rest of our year and never close out these topics because they are fascinating, and the vast amount of information that we gather each year about our solar system and beyond is constantly growing. We will build our foundation of astronomy on the basics of our home planet’s movement and how that affects our lives. Next week, we will do a more in-depth comparison of Earth and our lonely satellite, the moon.
Looking Ahead –
We will finish our study of the Earth and moon by doing a comparison of the movements of each and how that affects the eclipses that we see and when we see them. This requires not only thinking in three dimensions but also doing that on a grand scale. We will also look at some of the physical features that both Earth and moon have in common and what differences we see.
News of Astronomy for the Week: Since we have been discussing our moon, I thought I would share an article about the 79 moons of Jupiter (at least the ones that we know of). Astronomers found twelve of them in the past year; yet more proof that the world of science is always expanding. Check out this article in Discover magazine to learn more about the crazy moons of this gas giant in our solar system.
