The Cardinal Letter
2022-2023 Fall Edition
Message from Principal Goodman
Our new freshmen came together to participate in our LINK program to start off the school year. This program pairs our senior and junior students with our incoming freshmen to provide guidance and support as they transition to high school. Our goal is to create a school environment of inclusivity where students feel a sense of belonging in our school community and empowerment to contribute to our school culture. Parents were invited to a session on high school expectations to give clarity and support for the transition from middle school to the high school. Thank you for joining us if you were able.
This school year, we are continuing to find ways to support our students. Chippewa Falls Senior High School is a BARR school. This stands for Building Assets and Reducing Risks. The freshman teachers meet weekly to discuss students strengths, challenges, and brainstorm resources and supports that can help students be successful in high school. This is our fourth year of implementation of this system, and we have had improvements in attendance, behavior, and academic success. You will continue to see information about BARR throughout the year.
This year, we are using our responsive scheduling system to give students a choice to sign up for extra help with their teachers. They are able to get extra review sessions, take retakes, or get one-on-one tutoring. Our staff is also providing a curriculum on the Canvas Learning Management System. We are encouraging students to check their emails daily for information and communications from their instructors if absent.
We are committed to serving our families and our students to the best of our ability. We look forward to meeting with you on October 12 for Parent/Guardian-Teacher Conferences. Thanks for your continued support and partnership.
Respectfully yours,
Donna Goodman
Chippewa Falls Senior High School Principal

Our teachers will be utilizing their google calendars this year for you to schedule a conference time with the teachers YOU want to meet with (we will not be utilizing the walk-in format). You will have the option to indicate whether you want the conference to be in-person or virtual. Your confirmation email will include a link if you are going with the virtual option.
The scheduling document with the links will be sent NO LATER than Wednesday, October 5.
Mock Crash Planned
Chippewa Falls Senior High School will be the scene of a Mock Crash on Tuesday, October 11 from approximately 9:00-11:00 am. The outside portion of the event will take place in the staff parking lot that faces Terrill Street from 9:00-9:30 am. There will then be an inside portion of the program in the auditorium from approximately 9:45-10:45 am. 12th-grade students will participate in both portions of the event in person. All other students will view the event via Livestream in their classrooms.
For those who may not be familiar with an event like this, the objective is to help students realize what can happen if poor choices are made with regard to driving a vehicle while under the influence. The intent is to make the outside portion of the event as “real” as possible. Because of this, there will be multiple emergency vehicles involved with lights and sirens, as if they are responding to an actual crash scene. Additionally, there will be funeral home vehicles at the event. Finally, the Mayo One helicopter will also make an appearance if their schedule allows. They will land in the green space directly adjacent to the parking lot.
The inside portion of the event will allow students to hear from various speakers on the topic, including a keynote presentation by a mother who lost a daughter due to actual circumstances similar to the simulation.
For Neighborhood Members:
We understand that this event will cause a neighborhood disturbance. However, we feel the potential benefits of educating our students are worth the disturbance. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
For Parents:
We understand that some students may have circumstances that would make participating in an event like this very traumatic. If you feel that your child should not participate on this day, please keep them at home during the event from 9:00-11:00 am. Please note the reason for their absence when you call the attendance office and they will be excused.

Attendance Information
The high school attendance line is accessible 24 hours per day:

- If your student will be arriving late or needs to leave early: Press 1
- To report or excuse an absence: Press 2
Regular student attendance is required by law (State Statute 118.16) and is essential if students are to make satisfactory progress in school. Students are required to attend all class periods. It is the responsibility of the student and the parent to see that the student attends school each day school is in session. Excused absences include: illness or injury; medical, legal, DMV, or military appointments, college visits, funerals, school-related activities including sporting or competitive events and field trips, family vacations (please notify the school in advance), and family emergencies.
MEDICAL EXCUSE REQUIREMENT: Excessive student absences may result in the student being placed “On Medical”. Parents will receive a letter notifying them that their student has been placed “On Medical” and all future illness-related absences may require a medical excuse from a physician.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES: Any absence that is not cleared by a parent or guardian within 5 school days of the absence (the day of the absence and 4 additional school days) may be listed permanently as unexcused, which will generate a major behavior referral.
