CSD Top 3
Your monthly school district newsletter
Thursday, March 2
Dear Canby Families,
Please enjoy this month’s CSD Top 3, those three things we think you’d like to know, plus the monthly lunch menu. Thanks for reading!
Students get Building
Since 1972, construction students at Canby High School have had the opportunity to gain real-life work experience through building a house in town. The tradition continues as Darren Monen’s advanced construction students are busy framing a home in the Timber Park neighborhood, and thanks to a smart deal, they’ll build many more there in the years to come. The school district owned a plot of land near Baker Prairie Middle School known as “The Cougar Run Property,” which was sold last year with the caveat that the district would retain eight of the lots for the construction class. So, now the class has a whole block to build over the next 15-16 years with each house taking about two years to build.
The current project is a modern, single-level home with more than 2,000 square feet, four bedrooms, and an oversized back patio. According to Monen, he and the students carefully selected a blueprint that would both fit the lot and match the neighborhood. If you’re in the area, drive by and take a peek at the progress!
DLI School Visits
Last Wednesday as part of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) International Conference, Canby School District had the honor of hosting visitors at Trost Elementary School and Baker Prairie Middle School to learn about our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. Guests heard an overview of the program and then had the opportunity to visit classrooms at both schools. Students and staff did an amazing job showcasing the three goals of DLI: bilingualism, biliteracy, and socio-cultural competence. Then, in the following days, a group of Canby staff participated in the 52nd annual conference hosted in Portland, OR for the first time!
