From the Principal...Matt Clark
I hope this message finds you well. It's been an outstanding week here at Thompson, and we have some exciting news to share with you.
First and foremost, we had our first all-school dance since prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was a resounding success. The event was very well attended, and both students and staff had a fantastic time. The return of this cherished tradition was a heartwarming reminder of the sense of community we hold dear at Thompson.
Furthermore, we capped off the week with the first-ever Parade of Champions at Thompson. This event was organized to celebrate our 8A Girls Volleyball team, who accomplished a remarkable feat by winning their conference championship this season without losing a single set. We couldn't be prouder of their dedication and achievements. It's weeks like these that reaffirm my belief that there is no better place to work than a middle school. The energy, enthusiasm, and growth we witness in our students every day are truly remarkable.
In addition to these joyful moments, we also dedicated time this week to address a critical issue - bullying. We engaged in conversations with each team about what constitutes bullying, its effects on all parties involved, and what to do if your child feels like they are being bullied. We genuinely appreciate the opportunity to speak directly with your children about these important topics.
We also want to emphasize that as we work with 11, 12, 13, and 14-year-olds who will inevitably make mistakes and sometimes unkind decisions. Our approach is to use these instances as learning opportunities. No child should have their life significantly altered (or be “canceled”) based on a momentary lapse in reason, or even if they are intentionally being cruel or mean. We want our students to learn from their mistakes, not be chastised and outcast because of them.
Thank you for your ongoing support and trust in our school community. Together, we can continue to foster an environment where our students thrive, learn, and grow.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
Halloween Costumes
This year at TMS we are going to allow costumes on Halloween (Tuesday, October 31) because this falls on a school attendance day. Here are our guidelines:
If you are going to wear a costume, I also expect that you have come to school ready to learn on Halloween.
All costuming must happen at home. That includes any hair or make-up.
With make-up, we need to be able to know who you are-no full face make-up.
The costume must be school appropriate.
For students, there are no masks or inflatable costumes allowed.
There can be nothing that you carry around that is extra. (ie. props, fake weapons, scythes, clubs, dolls, etc.)
Teachers are expected to teach that day, though they may have Halloween themed lessons. And yes, you will be changing for PE.
There will be no Halloween parties. Or candy. Or other treats. Because you will get enough junk at night if you trick or treat.
After Halloween please only bring a couple of pieces of candy per day. If you bring more, I will get it and I will eat it. And I don't need any more candy. And throw away your wrappers in the garbage.
TMS After School Tutoring Program
'North Stars Helping Thunder' is an after school tutoring program where St. Charles North High School Honors students help our Thunder students with their homework. This program started last week and runs from 3:45 - 4:30 pm every Tuesday and Thursday in the LRC. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sarah Romano (Sarah.romano@d303.org) or Diane Pollilo (Louise.polillo@d303.org), Thompson Staff Facilitators. Please consider encouraging your child to take advantage of these resources!
Veterans Day Assembly
Veterans Day is a time to honor American veterans of all wars and branches. Many of us know, or have known, family or friends who have served in the armed forces to defend our country. This year we are celebrating Veterans Day with a school assembly on Friday, November 10th at 9:00 am to honor these individuals and acknowledge their dedication and service.
If your child has someone in your family, or a family friend, they would like to invite to attend our assembly and introduce to the Thompson community, please fill out the google form below by November 2nd. Veteran's family members are also welcome to attend the celebration. A light breakfast will be provided after the program for Veterans, family members, and students introducing their veteran.
