February 2018 - News and Notes to Keep You Connected
A Note From the Principal
Dear Parents,
February is upon us! This is a crucial time of the year in our students' development of important academic skills. Unfortunately, it is also the time of year that different illnesses creep into our homes and cause our children to become sick. With that in mind, please read the important note from our nurse, Mrs. Coffelt, below, as a reminder of school policies for illness. I've also included a guide for parents regarding the flu from the Center for Disease Control. The flu is just one of the illnesses impacting some of our students; this guide can help you understand the symptoms and suggested care. If every family follows our policies and these suggested care protocols, we will be much more likely to keep our students healthy and in school. If your child is sick and needs to stay home, work can be made up when he/she is well.
On another note...
Tonight is the Super Bowl, and many of us will be watching with great anticipation as the year's two top teams battle it out to see who will reach the pinnacle of football greatness for the year. Similarly, the "Super Bowl" for our third, fourth, and fifth grade students starts at the end of this month with the first round of ISTEP testing! Watch for more information about ISTEP coming home from your child's teacher, including ways you can help your child be ready for these important tests. Remember, too, that we cannot approve pre-arranged absences during testing weeks and appointments for students in those grades should not be scheduled at those times.
As always, thank you for helping us create optimal learning conditions for our students at school. We're looking forward to a great month of February!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Donovan

First Grade Music Program
This Tuesday night, Feb. 6, we will hold the first grade music program. Doors will open at 6:30, and students are to report to their classrooms by 6:40 p.m. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. Following the performance, parents will pick students back up from the classrooms. We look forward to seeing the results of all of their hard work leading up to this performance!
First Grade Art Show - Following the Music Program!
First grade parents, after picking up your students following the music program Tuesday night, be sure to walk through the art/music hall downstairs to view all of the amazing artwork that Mrs. Collins has helped the students put together. Congratulations to all of our creative students on these beautiful pieces of art!
Competition Updates
Congratulations to all of our fourth and fifth grade students who participated in this year's Battle of the Books! It is always amazing to see what the students learn and are able to remember from all of the books. It's a great lesson for them in collaboration and teamwork, too, as they must share the workload and then work well together to perform well in the final competition. Congratulations to this year's school winners, the Titan Knights team. They represented our school very well in the final district competition on Friday! Thanks to Mrs. Silver, our librarian, for coordinating this great event for our students.
Next Saturday, Feb. 10th, will be the first VEX Robotics competition ever held at Clarks Creek. This event will benefit all of the Plainfield elementary teams. 41 teams from around the state will be converging on our building to see if they can get their robots to perform various tasks for points. Good luck to coaches Mrs. Sweeney and Mrs. Richter, and to all of the team members! They've been working very hard in their first year and have learned so much!
Mr. Nelson and Mrs. Schaffer have been coaching our Math Bowl team this year. They will be competing on February 22nd against many other local teams. Good luck to this team in their final weeks of preparation!

Valentines for School? How Does that Work?
Valentine's Day is February 14th! This is one of those special days when we take time out of our busy school schedules to do something just for fun. We will have a Valentine's Day party in every classroom that afternoon. Students are not required to bring in valentines for their classmates. If they choose to, they should have one for every member of the class. Teachers will send lists home if your child would like to address them to their friends. Homemade valentines are more than welcome! It's a great chance for your child to show off his/her creativity! If your child would like to bring valentines, but you are unable to provide those, please let your child's teacher know - we can help!
Parties that day will be at 1:45 for first grade, as they have special classes at the very end of the day. For everyone else, parties begin at 2:45. Volunteers must be signed up ahead of time and must have a completed background check on file. Volunteers taking their students home at the end of the day after parties must sign them out with the teacher in the classroom.
Just a reminder, too, deliveries of flowers, balloons, or any other items cannot be made to classrooms. Please plan to celebrate this special day with your children at home.

Something Big is Coming!
It's almost time for our One School, One Book program! Those of you who have been at CC over the past two years will recognize this special event that takes place over the course of about a month. Thanks to the PTO's generosity and all of you who have purchased books through our Scholastic Book Fairs, each CC family will be receiving this year's special book to read at home. Much more information will be coming very soon, but be on the lookout for all the details! What's the book this year? Well, that's a surprise, of course! Students will see the "big reveal" at school before books come home.
Lost and Found
Don't forget to fill out the Lost and Found form, below, if there is something that you know your child is missing that hasn't been found within a week. Students can always look for lost items on the tables in Town Hall, as well. Also, be sure that you are putting your names inside of all of your child's items. Anything with a name on it will be returned on the day items are cataloged if not found before that.

Reminder - Visiting for Lunch
We know that parents often want to come in and eat lunch with their children on special occasions. You are welcome to do so by following the usual school visit procedures - beginning with stopping in the office to sign in and get a visitor tag. Please be aware, though, that space in our cafeteria is currently VERY limited. Please be prepared for the possibility that you may have to eat in another location with your student when you arrive.

Reminder - Volunteer at Clarks Creek!
If you have some time to donate at Clarks Creek, be sure to complete a Volunteer Background Check and have it cleared prior to the first volunteer experience. This can take a couple of weeks, so be sure to plan ahead! These are also needed prior to chaperoning field trips, etc. The form can be found at http://www.plainfield.k12.in.us/o/clarks-creek-elementary-school/documents .
Another thing we ask all volunteers to complete annually is the Volunteer Confidentiality Form. This form is available in the school office and should also be completed before the first volunteer experience.
We appreciate the help of all of our volunteers! We couldn't do it without you!
