About Star Assessments
Students K-4th grade will be taking the Star Assessment between Sept. 3-17th. Star assessments help teachers better understand what students know and can do in the areas of early literacy, reading, or math. As a student takes the test, the software selects items based on the student’s responses. If the student answers correctly, the next item will be more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the next item will be less difficult. By adjusting the difficulty of the items to what students show they can or cannot do, the assessment is an accurate way to help teachers identify what skills students are ready to learn. Teachers use this information to guide their instruction.
•Star Early Literacy tests are used for students in grades pre-K through 1 (beginning readers who do not yet read independently or need early literacy skills assessed). There are 27 items and it generally takes fewer than 15 minutes for the student to complete the test.
•Star Reading tests are used for students in grades 1—4. Star reading has 34 items and it generally takes fewer than 20 minutes for the student to complete the test.
•Star Math tests are used for students in grades 1—4. Star Math has 34 items and
generally takes fewer than 25 minutes for the student to complete the test.

Math Pilot Information
Muskego-Norway Schools is focused on continuous improvement and exploring ways to improve student learning. During the 2021-22 school year, a team of teachers created specific criteria of what math instruction should look and sound like, and then explored various math resources that meet that criteria. Following the year-long study, three resources were brought forward. During the 2022-23 school year, some staff will be engaged in a pilot process to further explore three resources. The resources selected by the team are Illustrative Mathematics, Bridges, and Context for Learning Mathematics. Teachers will also continue to access our current math resource.
A very thoughtful process was facilitated to ensure instruction is cohesive for students and teachers continue to have the opportunity to collaborate with one another. If your child’s teacher is piloting math resources, you will receive additional information throughout the year as well as be asked to provide feedback from a parent/guardian perspective.
