Visits and Exchanges 2023-24
This week, our new International Co-ordinator, Mr Marshall, has been taking assemblies with all students to publish the 2023-24 visits offer. This morning, he spoke to Year 10 and shared with them opportunities to travel to Paris, Lyon, Heidelberg, and launched a new visit to Venice for GCSE Italian students.
We also encouraged those who study Geography and History to take part in the field visits and History residentials to Durham as fantastic enhancements of the GCSE curriculum, bringing classroom learning to life.
The visits and exchanges programme changes lives and gives our students a global and open-minded view of the world. It develops their communication skills, linguistic skills and confidence and enables them to develop into ambitious, principled and resilience young adults.
With three new destinations, in San Sebastian, Jerez and Venice this year, we hope that students are excited for the new visits season. Check your passports are in date, dust off your suitcases and keep practising new vocabulary. We will soon be booking flights!
Frankfurt Long Term Exchange
On Monday, we welcomed 9 students from the Goethe Gymnasium in Frankfurt, our partner school of over 40 years! These students will join our Year 10 cohort and spend 8 weeks learning alongside our students in school. We are sure that they are going to fit into our school community brilliantly and we can't wait to see the inter-cultural friendships blossom as a result of this exchange.
The importance of school attendance
Improving attendance is everyone’s business. The barriers to accessing education are wide and complex, both within and beyond the school gates, and are often specific to individual students and families. Students have now had the opportunity to experience all lessons on their timetable and for the majority, they will be fully settled into the routine of learning in these lessons. However, for some, it is more challenging and if your child is struggling, please make contact with their form tutor in the first instance to discuss your concerns.
For our new Year 7 students, the following may help as a reminder on how to prepare for the next day and remove the rush that can cause heightened anxiety first thing in the morning.
Well done on an amazing start to the year in terms of attendance. 944 students still have 100% attendance!
Language of the Month: Arabic
Every September, we celebrate Arabic as Language of the month. We were visited by Kareem Samara, a musician, composer, and organizer from London. His work focuses on the electro acoustic possibilities of the Oud and arabic music. He is also a founding member of Raast Collective and has become known as a versatile Oud player and Guitarist. Year 7 heard Kareem perform his mix of traditional and modern Arabic music and our Arabic Club enjoyed a music workshop. We always welcomed new students to our Arabic Club, which explores both language and culture with lots of enrichment activities.

Opportunities for 2023-24
Work Experience - Can You Help?
As part of our Work Related Learning modules, all Year 10 and Sixth Form students take a two week work experience placement. This academic year, work experience for Sixth Form students will take place from Monday 11th March – Friday 22nd March inclusive and for Year 10, theirs is scheduled for Monday 3rd June – Friday 14th June inclusive.
Although AES students are responsible for finding their own placements, we keep a database of parent and alumni contacts who are willing to offer placements. Please email enterprise@aesessex.co.uk if you would like to put your contact details on our database. Please include the industry you work in and a brief description of the roles our students may undertake.

OPPORTUNITIES
Calling All Native Speaker Parents!
Do you have any availability between 9:10am and 3:30pm to support our students with their language learning? Every year we welcome a group of native speakers from our wider school community to support our Sixth Form students with their language learning. The Heads of Subject liaise with the volunteers, who then have a regular slot with a small group of students at a time to practice their speaking skills ahead of their exams.
If you would be happy to volunteer a few hours each week to support our students, it would be greatly appreciated. To volunteer, or for further information, please contact Mrs Latimer via enquiries@aesessex.co.uk
