Ms. Leveque's Weekly Newsletter
From the Desk of Ms. Leveque
Week of October 2, 2022
Happy first official week of fall and welcome to October! I was able to go apple picking last weekend which truly is one of my favorite things in the world to do. It takes me right back to childhood and reminds me why I love this season so much. I hope you and your family are able to enjoy this time of year also!
At Killam, we cannot believe we have almost completed a month of school. We've been learning and relearning our routines and expectations. This past week, we began our fall benchmarking where we meet individually with our students to learn more about their literacy and math experiences and find their current instructional levels. The assessment period goes over multiple weeks and provides an in-the-moment view of our students. From here, we can create differentiated learning groups that allow teachers to meet their students right where they are, set goals for growth, and provided targeted instruction. We look forward to the year ahead with your children and celebrating their growth along the way. It's one of the best parts of elementary school!
Stay well,
Ms. Leveque

2022 Spring MCAS Data
As you may know, the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) publicly released spring 2022 MCAS results this past week. More information can be found by visiting DESE’s website and clicking on the “Assessment” tab. Parents/guardians of students who participated in spring 2022 MCAS will receive their individual student results the week of October 10th. Additionally, I will be sharing information about our school’s results with families in October, via a video. At the October 6th school committee meeting, the central office team will present an overview of the spring 2022 MCAS results. While we use a variety of assessments to monitor student learning, MCAS helps us monitor broad systems and identify areas needing further investigation and attention. As such, data will be reviewed and analyzed with our staff to support our school improvement efforts. As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.
National Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 – October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. The Reading Public Schools is committed to the success of all students. This is a district priority and for students of color, and different religions and background to feel like they are included in this “all” then they need to see themselves in the Reading Public Schools. What does that look like? Well, it’s what we hear in our announcements, it’s what we hear from the adults working in the building, it’s what we learn in the classroom through lessons and assignments, its emphasizing it to our staff to celebrate and teach these things, it’s what we see on the walls in the halls as we transition from class to class, and it’s what we are having for lunch from off our lunch menu. We want to launch this work by recognizing different cultures and experiences within our community.
Check out this virtual bookshelf that Kim Adamo, our library media specialist, put together that shares stores and videos about the Hispanic culture.
