Lewiston Elementary
September 2023
Hello Lewiston Families!
We will use our monthly newsletter to share what is happening at Lewiston Elementary throughout the year. Please be sure to take the time to review the information in the newsletter each month to stay informed on elementary happenings.
School Hours: 8:00am - 3:00pm
Morning drop off begins at 7:40am.
Please call the office before 2:00 PM if there are changes to the way your child will be going home. The office is very busy at the end of the day and it becomes increasingly difficult to accommodate last-minute transportation changes after 2:00 PM, so the earlier you can communicate the changes, the better.
To ensure the safety of all PCSD students, parents/guardians must provide a note or call the office directly to communicate any changes to a child's end-of-day transportation arrangements.

A Message From The Principal - Ms. VanderSchaaf
Welcome back all students and families-
We are looking forward to a great school year. These first days of school are about establishing routines, procedures, and students connecting with their peers to build strong relationships within the classroom. During the first week of school I spoke with each class about their jobs here at school, which are to be respectful and to learn. We cannot wait to celebrate their positive behaviors and learning.
Speaking of routines, you can support your child by making sure that he/she reads every night, has a chore to practice responsibility, and has a set bedtime so that he/she gets plenty of rest and gets up in the morning ready to do his/her best in school.
We cannot wait to celebrate learning this year at Lewiston. I look forward to meeting you and working with you throughout the year.
Parents:
We would like to thank you for your patience with traffic flow and bus loading this first week of school. Everything is falling into place now. Thank you for working with us. We greatly appreciate it.

Boys & Girls Club
What is the Boys & Girls Club?
The Club is an afterschool and summer program for kids ages 7-18 in 1st through 12th grade. We offer choice-based program options in a variety of educational, healthy lifestyles, and character building areas including: homework help, reading time/assistance, board games, art projects, physical activities/games, social games & games room, STEM based learning activities and more!
When can I pick up my child?
While the Club is open until 7pm after school (6pm on Fridays), parents/guardians can pick their child up from the Club at any time between afterschool and close. We’ll provide a schedule of activities and times to plan around so if your child wants to participate in something specific, you can plan pickups around that. During summer, drop off and pick up can happen at any point during regular club hours (7:30am to 5:30pm). There may be days where drop off needs to happen prior to a certain time for your child to participate in a certain activity. There may also be days where pick up needs to happen after a certain time for your child to participate in a certain activity. Notice of these days/times will be provided in advance once specifics are confirmed.
Do you provide snack/meals?
We’ll provide a snack after school during the school year and in the afternoons during summer. A typical snack would include a milk or juice with a fruit, granola bar or packaged cracker/graham option. We’ll participate in the summer food program through the WI Dells School District that will provide lunch to those who wish to take one. Otherwise, children should/can bring their own lunch during summer provided it doesn’t require cooking/heating. There is no cost for snacks / lunches through the Club.
Do you have a teen center?
While we have plans to create a teen specific space, we will not have that ready by our May 1st open date or summer. Teens who attend the Club immediately will have the opportunity to do programs and activities as well as mentor our younger mentors. Eventually, we’ll have teen specific staff, space and programs. We understand there may be many more questions and encourage you to reach out via phone at (608) 742-6987 or email at EliC@bgcwcw.org. Beginning Monday, April 10th, staff will be on site from 10am-4:30pm. While you can stop in and speak directly to us, we will be working throughout our space getting things ready for May 1st.
Portage Community School District Media Release:
The Portage Community School District may use student photos, interviews, videos and projects for educational and informational purposes. This media may be used in classroom projects, district newsletters, newspaper articles, school websites, District-sponsored social media sites, (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.), and for general media purposes. Please send written notification to the Portage Community School District Gerstenkorn Administration Office, Attention: Communication Department, 305 E Slifer Street, Portage, WI 53901 if you DO NOT want your student’s photo used. * If your student is included in a photo or project as part of a large group or public area gatherings where the student is not clearly identified, that photo or project may be used with or without an opt-out notification on file.
From The District Nurse
Welcome Back! Let's make this a safe and healthy school year. Medications that must be available to a student while at school or school related events must follow district policy. This requires one completed medication form for each medication. Medication may be prescribed by a healthcare provider or purchased as an over the counter product. Cough drops or throat lozenges are being sold with other ingredients that require us to return to the process of completing a medication form and having these administered through the main office. The medication form is available on the website in both English and Spanish. Print the form or pick one up in the main office. Complete the form. Parents must deliver the form and pharmacy labeled or originally packaged container of medication that is not expired to the main office. Several steps will be completed with the parent there and then provided to the school nurse for review prior to the medication being administered by designated trained school personnel. Until the school nurse has completed the medication and form review, parents are welcomed to come to school to administer the medication.
Students who will participate in school-sponsored activities outside of school hours or overnight should also plan ahead for any medication needs during these times. Again, one form for each medication. Some coordination with the school nurse to prepare for these special events is just a phone call or visit away.
Please take a moment to talk with your child about medication safety. Discuss the importance of not bringing pills to school in a pocket or sharing any medication with others. Students found with medication on their person without paperwork will have the medication secured in the health room and parent notification made. Together, we will keep our school safe and supportive while meeting each child's needs.
Contact your school nurse for assistance.
