Just a note, several TLs mentioned that suggesting some Iowa School Library Standard(s) is a helpful reference. We'll try it again this year in some newsletters.
What Social Media Platform is Most Popular?
Which social media platform is used by 95% of teens?
You’ll want to read the article and study the charts in the Pew Research Center survey (April to May 2022.)
Here's an interesting quote from the study:
“Do kids use social media too much? Only 36% of the teens in this survey think so. Fifty-five percent said they use just the right amount, and 8% said they don’t use it enough!
Could they give it up? Fifty-four percent of survey respondents said it would be somewhat to very hard to do so; 46% said it would be somewhat to very easy.”Iowa School Library Standard TL4. The TL teaches the skills and understandings required for digital literacy and the safe, legal, and ethical use of digital resources.
Social Media and Copyright
Sharing on Social Platforms
TikTok and some other social media platforms include their own music library to use in making videos. Using pre-cleared music ensures that the videos will not be subject to copyright infringement claims or takedown notices.
Platforms are not interchangeable. Sharing those videos across platforms (i.e. from TikTok to YouTube, FortNite, Roblox, etc.) can create problems. There are different music licensing terms and conditions for each platform so it may be a copyright infringement to transfer between platforms.
Consider using Soundzabound.com that has been licensed for K-12 schools by Iowa AEAs.
Social Platforms and Safety
Posting videos with student names, faces, home addresses, and the even name of the school can expose private facts about the individual and this data needs to be protected.
When using a platform for video school assignments, teach and model safe Internet practices.
- Require protective measures such as making links private
- Do not include student names or other personally identifiable information
- Seek family permission and communicate what platform the student will be using
- Consider private links or password requirements for livestream events
- Be aware of the platform’s community standards for content before uploading

OneClick Check List
We can provide a PDF of the QuickCards for elementary students. You can print, or have Heartland AEA print them. Cost:
- 8.5x11 color: $.12/page -- $.32/page laminated + $.01 to cut
- 8.5x11 b/w: $.06/page – $.25/page laminated + $.01 to cut
Let us know if you need the OneClick image or button for your webpage.
The Heartland AEA page has been changed to emphasize access to digital resources through AEA Scout and OneClick.
A poster and laptop cling are available for purchase. Go to csonline.heartlandaea.org and search OneClick.
If your school would like apps removed on the school launchpad, let us know. For example, Pebble Go is not needed at high school.
We’ll have a 1-minute video that shows how to create folders, change the launchpad look, move apps, create an auto-launch app. It should be available later next week.
Teachers can learn more about OneClick in this SoftChalk presentation.
Settings:
- Teachers can add their own apps from the ClassLink library of thousands of apps. It is currently turned off for students.
- Apps to the digital resources provided by Heartland AEA and statewide are “locked” and can’t be deleted by the user. Individuals can move lesser-used apps to a folder. This might be helpful with our youngest learners.
- Safari problem? The Safari extension is a little “weird” with ClassLink. It’s better to try to use the Chrome ClassLink extension.
- Some apps will require the user to enter their unique username/password the first time and then it’s remembered. Example: Training System in AEA Learning Online.
- If a teacher is assigned to multiple buildings or is district-wide, it’s possible that their listing in the Google groups might need to be changed. Contact us.
- Teacher can’t log in. There may be two things going on in the AEA training system. 1. The teacher’s school email in the AEA training system may not match their school email. Change to the school email. 2. When you find the Profile(s) section under Employment Info in the training system, be sure the Teacher box is checked. If you need assistance, contact Blake, bmeling@iowaaea.org.
- Questions? Start with Susan Schrader.
No. 'The Simpsons' Did Not Predict Monkeypox
