WHITESBORO MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPUS
June 2020
From Mr. Egresits:
It doesn't seem possible this school year is almost over. This is my 27th year in education and it will be the one we never forget. From the Halloween flood to COVID-19 and everything in between, our community and campus has dealt with more challenges in one year than most buildings deal with in ten years. I want to acknowledge our parents and the work you have done to help your children accomplish so much these past months during the shutdown. We know and recognize our essential parents that are working the front lines and coming home and helping teach their children. We appreciate everything our parents have done under these extremely difficult circumstances. As you drive by our campus, you see the blue bows that are affixed to our trees, signs and pillars. In the spirit of our middle school motto, "One Campus, One Family," thank you again to all the heroes in our community that make this such a special district to live and work in.
Stay safe and remain #WboroStrong
John Egresits

Teacher in the Spotlight:
Mr. Burns holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, as well as a Master's Degree in Reading Education from SUNY College at Cortland. He has been teaching for 27 years, with subjects including ELA and social studies.
In addition to his background, Mr. Burns enjoys movies, spending time with family and friends, traveling, and taking care of his two French Bulldogs (Bouvier and Monroe). Thanks for all you do, Mr. Burns!
Teacher in the Spotlight:
Following college, Mrs. Giovanonne worked in Point Pleasant, NJ where she taught Math 6 and Algebra for two years. Following this, she returned to the area and taught math in grades 7, 8 and 9 in the Herkimer Jr. Sr. High School as an Inclusion Teacher.
In the fall of 2009, Mrs. Giovanonne was hired by the Whitesboro School District where she has taught Math 8, Algebra and Geometry. She has been in the district for the last 11 years and enjoys the middle school level and being in the classroom with her students.
Outside of school Mrs. Giovannone spends time with her husband and two daughters. She enjoys running, warm weather and sunshine. Thank for being such a positive role model, Mrs. Giovanonne.
Innovative Teaching and Student Showcase:
No doubt the quick and unanticipated switch to online learning had most of us overwhelmed in the initial stages. Despite the lack of classroom meeting time, our teachers sought to continue to meet, virtually with their classes, and focus on many enthusiastic topics.
Just prior to Memorial weekend, Mrs. Lonczak, a sixth grade science teacher, held a zoom meeting with her students and provided information, visuals and held discussions regarding the upcoming space mission. Lonczak spoke about the May 27th launch from Kennedy Space Station, a site that hasn't been used in about ten years. She showed pictures of the space craft, capsule and explained how it could be reused.
Further explanation was given surrounding the two astronauts who will dock their capsule and board the International Space Station. She shared, " this is the first time a crew has been sent into space, from the United States in almost ten years."
Students formulated many questions and offered input as discussion continued.
Mrs. Lonczak also shared pictures of previously assigned extra credit that students took part in during the quarantine. Pictured below are examples of students' homemade ice cream in a bag and as well as homemade lava lamps.

More Innovative Teaching and Students:
Students in Mrs. Nobis' music classes learned how to use the Arpeggio tool we used in the Chrome Music Lab. The students learned the chords to the song "Country Roads" by John Denver and had to play each of the chords (accompany themselves) while singing.
Hats off to the many students who not only put together the music but sang the song beautifully and several with their own wonderful renditions! Great job!
