5th Grade Science with Mr. McIntosh
Looking Back –
Well into Unit 2, we were examining the ways that energy is transferred as it passes from the producers to the consumers and then, by way of decomposers, back to the producers again. This is just one of the cycles of life that we studied as a part of our ecosystems. In the Looking Ahead section, we try to see the connections to environment as part of the equation.
Last week’s lessons: Unit 2, Lesson 3: Food Webs: Energy Flow in an Ecosystem, & Lesson 4: Cycles in Ecosystems
Key Vocabulary: energy pyramid, food chain, food web, vivarium, inorganic, organic
Looking Ahead -
As we finish up this unit, we want to understand how our conditions affect the survival of different species and how our activities are contributing factors that may determine whether or not a species thrives, survives, or dies out. These are very current topics and should be the source of lively discussion.
Assignments for the week of Sept. 17-21: Unit 2, Lesson 5: Changing Environmental Conditions, & Lesson 6: Unit 2 Review and Assessment
TGA #1 is due 9/24! Get it done this week!
Key Vocabulary: limiting factor, environmental conditions, climate, ecology
Creature of the week – This week I am challenging students to investigate the Opalescent Nudibranch (Hermissenda opalescens), a very beautiful sea creature found near the Pacific coastline of North America. Nudibranches are some of the most brightly colored ocean organisms – far different from the snails and slug found on land!

We've listened to your concerns and have made some adjustments to the schedule to help spread your workload. You will notice a new time for music and art, as well as an additional help session that is focused on math and ELA. These adjustments should allow you more time to complete lessons through the week and to attend The Hive.
