GED Success
Congratulations to Eric Parker, the first student to obtain his GED diploma this program year! Eric was a model student and greatly benefited from the small group classes and individualized curriculum in our GED Preparation Program. In addition to receiving supportive services, incentives, and tutoring, Eric also participated in our work experience program. The work experience stipend provided Eric with the financial support he needed as he prepared to transition out of the Out-of-School program and relocate to Georgia. Eric has made a lasting connection with the Staff at the YWC and we wish him the best as he continues his training in finance. Well done Eric!
Youth Symposium
The Youth Workforce Center staff together with other Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Youth Contractors and the Hampton Roads Workforce Council attended the recently held National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP) Youth Symposium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The symposium “brings together workforce development thought leaders and stakeholders whose focus is providing workforce development opportunities for the youth population” and addresses “critical issues head-on by sharing innovative solutions and empowering strategies that will shape a brighter future as we navigate through the challenges faced by our youth workforce. The opening keynote speaker was, Chef Jeff Henderson. As an award-winning American chef, critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling author, philanthropist, television personality, and highly sought-after leader in personal and professional development, he inspired symposium attendees to see their client’s trauma as an explanation for their current circumstances.

Family Counseling Center Updates
The fall semester is underway at the Flanagan Counselor Education Clinic! We are so excited to serve our community through the New Horizons Family Counseling Center. We have several exciting updates to share with you as we step into the 2023/2024 school year.
The Clinic has a new group of students who are already hard at work in the New Horizons
Family Counseling Center! They bring with them a wide array of interests and many fresh ideas.
All the students are working closely with our new Clinic Director, Dr. Erin Woods. Dr. Woods is
a Licensed Professional Counselor, who joined the clinic in March of 2023. She is passionate
about providing high quality services to the families in our communities.
We are thrilled to continue offering couples, family, and individual counseling services. We hope
to implement some new service options this year, including new group options. If you have any
questions about our services or the referral process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us by
phone or email. We look forward to our continued work together!
