EIGHTH GRADE WALK FOR GIVING
The eighth grade class has traditionally been focused on building a strong community and discovering their place in that community. This is an important year for students as they begin to develop an understanding of their role in the community and various ways they can help support their community.
One of the ways the students can do this is through the Walk for Giving. The Walk for Giving is a fundraiser that will support the Miscoe Hill Giving Tree program. The Giving Tree program provides gifts at the end of December to Miscoe Hill families in need during the holiday season. This is an opportunity for the Class of 2025 to see how they can make a huge difference in their community just by participating in an event.
All students are asked to find someone, to sponsor their Walk for Giving. No amount is too small. If we can get every student to find just one sponsor, the Class of 2025 will be able to proudly donate over $200 to the Giving Tree. That’s enough to supply at least eight families with additional gifts over the holidays!
The walk is scheduled for Monday, November 23rd for Cohort 1 and Tuesday, November 24th for Cohort 2. We are working in conjunction with the school nurse and administration to ensure that all Covid protocols will be followed. Students will be spaced out and will walk with their homeroom.
All donations (Cash or check made out to MURSD) can be handed in to your child’s homeroom teacher up until the day of the walk.
Our goal is to get 100% participation in the walk. If your child will not be in school on the 23rd or 24th, he/she can still participate by making a small donation. This is a great chance for the students to learn how they can make a difference and impact their community in a positive way.
Happy Giving,
The Eighth Grade Team

FLU VACCINE REQUIREMENT
Per the MA Department of Public Health, influenza immunization will be required for all children 6 months of age or older who are attending Massachusetts child care, pre-school, kindergarten, K-12, and colleges and universities. The new vaccine requirement is an important step to reduce flu-related illness and the overall impact of respiratory illness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
All MURSD students will be expected to have received a flu vaccine by December 31, 2020 for the 2020-2021 influenza season, unless either a medical or religious exemption is provided. Also exempted are K-12 students who are homeschooled and higher education students who are completely off-campus and engaged in remote learning only. This new flu immunization requirement to enter school in January is in addition to existing vaccine requirements for all those attending child care, preschool, K-12, and colleges and universities in Massachusetts. Elementary and secondary students in districts and schools that are using a remote education model are not exempt.
Please forward documentation of your child’s flu vaccine to the school nurse prior to December 31, 2020. Please email Gfarquharson@mursd.org or send a copy in to school.
Please click here for more information on the flu vaccine requirement.

Inspired Innovation Program and Center
ASA will occasionally visit Miscoe Hill to observe our programs, talk to students about Inspired Innovation programming, and take pictures of the student work in action. They have asked that we share this consent form with families so they can use photos or quotes in their publications.
Additionally, we are seeking parents who might be interested in participating in one of our Inspired Innovation Center career panel interviews. Interviews will be held via Zoom to discuss aspects of your career, the training or education needed for your field, future trends in your area of expertise, and what students can be doing now to prepare for a career in your sector. If you are interested in participating or taking a more active role in the Inspired Innovation programming, please fill out this form. There are a wide variety of opportunities depending on your availability.

eCYBERMISSION Club
eCYBERMISSION is a free national web-based STEM competition open to all students in grades 6-9. Students will work remotely via Zoom in teams of 3-4 students from Miscoe to identify a problem in their community, solve it following science and engineering principles, and communicate their work online to judges comprised of researchers and engineers working for the Department of Defense (DoD). Teams can identify problems from a wide list of mission areas including: (1) Alternative Sources of Energy; (2) Environment; (3) Food, Health & Fitness; (4) Forces & Motion; (5) National Security & Safety; (6) Robotics; and (7) Technology. Students will collaborate virtually with their team to perform all of the tasks necessary to complete their Mission Folder, including either developing and conducting an experiment or designing and building a prototype. Each team works with an adult Team Advisor who is there to assist and coach them, but students also have access to an online network of expert DoD researchers and engineers from across the country who are excited to offer virtual help. eCYBERMISSION Club will run November through February, and meet once a week afterschool entirely via Zoom. Rina Manser (Miscoe Hill Sixth Grade Teacher) and Michael Manser (Mechanical Engineer at the Natick Army Labs) will serve as team advisers. This is our third year offering eCybermission Club at Miscoe. Last year two sixth grade Miscoe teams won First Place and Honorary Mention at the state level!
