Now that spring break has come and gone, we are in full throttle mode! We have just finished testing our last English Learner students with the ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessment for California), and have already begun our SBAC testing as of April 11th for all our juniors. As busy as this time of year gets for our students (especially our seniors), please help us keep our students focused until the last day of school. Their academic success depends on 180 school days.

Our testing season is now upon us! We began SBAC testing on April 11 and all we can ask of our juniors is to try their absolute best. Last year we experienced a growth in both ELA and math (the only high school in the district to do so) by 5% and 6%, respectively, and are expecting continued growth this year. It is our goal to be the highest performing high school in CNUSD! With this, I want to inform you of two potential benefits for our students (beyond our school/district accountability).

• First, students may qualify for a potential grade bump in ELA and/or math, depending on their passing score (it varies for AP courses). Although the grade bump won't take effect until next school year when we receive the official results, it will reflect on this year's grades/GPA. Essentially, a D can become a C, a C becomes a B, and a B becomes and A.
  
• Second, students can potentially demonstrate that they are ready for college-level ELA and math courses. Our state has eliminated remedial ELA and math classes at the college level (community and university) and instead will require students to concurrently enroll in an additional support class if they have not demonstrated they are "college ready."

The bottom line is that these tests can have a personal impact on our students and we want them all to take this seriously. Please ensure that your child gets plenty of rest the night before his/her test date and and nutritious breakfast. The week of April 5-12 was Assistant Principals Appreciation Week! I want to take this opportunity to express my sincerest appreciation to our six APs: Mr. Stevens, Mrs. Stivers, Mr. Danesh, Ms. Vega, Mrs. Rodriguez, and Mr. Abbott. They do the behind-the-scenes heavy lifting to support our students, staff, and community. Corona High School will not run without their efforts. Thank you also to our Renaissance leaders for their appreciation surprise to kick off the week!

As was the case last year, this year's registration process must be completed online. Please refer to the flyer below for more information. Parents can also visit our registrar's office between 7:30 am and 2:00 pm if you need assistance with or access to a computer. As of April 8th, 40.39% of our students have completed the online registration process. Please reach out to us if you require assistance.

On April 10th our district's annual Pinning Ceremony was held in our Performing Arts Center to recognize 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30+ years of service to the district. Below you'll find the list of Panthers that received their recognition. We have two teachers who have devoted 30 years to CNUSD: Mr. Ballard and Mr. Doerr! Those pictured below attended and received their pin on stage.

Our Aerospace Engineering students have been exploring alternate uses of aerodynamic forces. They have been creating the rotary blades for a windmill and are seeing that the shape, size, and curve of the blades make a big difference when it comes to the amount of voltage the windmill produces. It's always great to see students applying their learning to real-life situations!

Is your student interested in being a part of amazing shows and productions next year at Corona High School? Whether a senior or freshman, actor or technician, there is a spot for everyone in the Theatre Department. Anyone interested in being placed in Intermediate or Advanced Theatre next year may sign up for an audition time either with Ms. Horn in R-102 or at this link: https://forms.gle/w4kS5jtYMuST5oVv9. Right before spring break, our Corona High School Symphonic Band received an excellent reading on March 26th at the SCSBOA concert festival held at Santiago High School. I had the opportunity to hear them first hand and they sounded absolutely amazing! I am proud of how they represented Corona High School. Way to go, Panthers!

Congratulations to our Madrigals! They recently earned Gold status (2nd Place) in San Antonio at the Heritage International Music Festival. Just as impressive is the fact that we also received the Spirit of San Antonio Award for being polite, positive, and representing our school and city with class! A special congratulations as well to Robert Saidi for his soloist award!

Our second photo project is currently on display for our staff and students to see on teh second floor of the S-building. This is our “Inpired By...” Gallery. Students in Photography 1 were asked to choose a favorite photographer (modern or historical), write a comprehensive research paper, and create images inspired by that photographic artist. Our gallery is a collection of each students' favorite image.

• NJROTC has begun a new professional development day on the last Thursday of each month. Cadets now have a choice to either wear their issued traditional uniform, business attire (shirt and tie), or formal dress on the last Thursday of each month. Whichever they choose, they will no doubt be amongst the best dressed on campus!

• "Good Morning" and "Happy Thursday" was the greeting this morning from our cadets to all the staff and administration as they made their way to school through the main office. Each Thursday our cadets want to show their appreciation by giving a warm welcome as staff enters the door.

• April 13th will be an NJROTC BBQ fundraiser for Math Field Day held on our campus. Please come on out and support our cadets. We will be serving lunch by the Star Room at great prices.

TONIGHT only (April 12th) will be our annual Staff vs. Seniors basketball game. Last year our staff took a crushing blow losing to the students for the first time...ever! This year we are committed to retiring to our old ways of winning! Come on out and support this Renaissance fundraiser!

Don't let your student miss this year's prom to be held at the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach on Saturday, April 27th. See flyer below for details.

Between April 15th-18th, will have our annual PROM CLOSET! This gives students the opportunity to get a FREE prom dress (some brand new with tags, others are gently used), shoes, and accessories. Students simply need to stop by O-11 during both lunches and before/after school on Wednesday April 17th! This is a program that is made possible by donations from staff and various members of teh community, and is all coordinated by our very own, Mrs. Reinhart!

GRAD NITE is May 30th and will be here before you know it! Tickets are $135 with ASB and $145 without. Don’t let your senior miss out on a fun-filled and memorable evening! This year's venue will be Magic Mountain and ticket prices includes FOOD and...A SEASON PASS! What a deal!

Our Upward Bound students had the great opportunity to visit UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Merced, San Jose State, and San Francisco State over Spring Break. This was part of the program's mission to expose students to post-secondary education and to make that goal a reality.

Corona Winter Guard performed on March 30th at the Winter Guard Association of Southern California competition hosted by Rancho Cucamonga High School. Our team put on an amazing performance that earned them 8th place! This was a great showing by our Panthers!

Spring Sports

• Baseball: We are holding on to first place with a 1-game lead over Norco High School. This past week we lost a close one to MLK at home, but rebounded with a win at MLK two days later with a score of 6-0 to preserve our 1st place league standing. League play continues while we host Centennial on April 13th and Santiago on April 16th.
  
• Softball: After a spring break victory at home over Spring Valley, our Panthers fell to Roosevelt 4-6. We play at Centennial today (April 12th).
  
• Track: Over spring break, our track team continued to train and compete. Egbe Ndip-Agbor traveled to Stanford to compete at the Stanford Invitational in the 400m and held it down for the Southern Section by taking first place! On Saturday, April 7th, Israel Echeverria, Nick Gutierrez, and Egbe competed at the Arcadia Invitational. Egbe took 3rd in the Invite Section of 400m and set a new school record with 55.08 and won the seeded 200m. Israel ran a personal best in the 800m and is setting his goals on breaking the school record. Great job by our Panther runners!
  
• Swim: We hosted Santiago on April 10th where we recognized our four seniors during our Senior Meet. Thank you seniors for your leadership: Luke Wolfe, Lexee Fontaine, Ahlee Kissani, and Bradley Manzo.
• Cheer: Our Varsity Cheer team competed Saturday, March 30th, at Claremont High school and won first place in their division. Latrell Logan won first place for his toe touch. Kennedy Peppers and Vivianna Aviles won third and first places, respectively, for their tumbling skills. The stunt group of Rylee Goodrich, Kristin Cushing, Kennedy Peppers, and Alecia Rangel won third place in the stunt down. Way to go, Panthers!
  

Given our history, Corona High School is very fortunate to have multiple generations that can call themselves Panthers. At many parent events I often ask for a show of hands of those that have graduated from Corona and sure enough, there are always several hands that go up. Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project offers a great leadership opportunity for students, which takes place in Sacramento from July 13th-20th. The application deadline is April 15th. The following is taken directly from their website (https://www.clylp.org/sacramento):

"Since its inception in 1982, the Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project (CLYLP) has offered a once in a lifetime opportunity for California’s youth in Sacramento. The Sacramento Leadership Conference (SLC) brings 120 high school students from throughout the state to participate in a week-long, intensive leadership program. Conference participants attend powerful workshops and seminars that enhance leadership skills, academic preparedness, self-esteem, cultural awareness, and provide an understanding of state and local government. Programming at all CLYLP programs including the SLC is based on CLYLP’s four curriculum “C’s”: Community, Culture, College, and Careers.

Participants will leave with valuable information and tools that they can begin using when they return to school in the Fall. Most importantly, students will leave with new friendships from throughout the state of California. Housing, meals, program materials and transportation to and from the conference are provided at no cost to the participants or their families."

We will be observing Chid Abuse Prevention Month throughout April and are asking that we show our support by wearing blue on April 15th. The sad news around our CNUSD student, Noah, has touched our entire community and our hearts go out to Noah and those close to him and his family.
