Principal's Message
Wow, what a week!
Check out the various events, from the October Surprise, writing letters to active Soldiers, the Egg Drop Challenge, then Spooktacular. It has been a super jammed packed week with fun activities for all!
School Site Council
If you love learning more about data, I have the group for you! The School Site Council addresses specifics about how students are performing and how staff addresses these needs. Not only do we look at data, but we also plan how we address scores and communicate this to our community. Click here for more information about the School Site Council If this is the group for you, please contact, Kimberly Attell at kattell@lasdschools.org
Coffee with the Principal
Wednesday, October 30th after morning assembly, I would like to invite you to come and have coffee with me and others, as I share state test scores, Oak Growth academically and how we use this information and other data to guide our practice during instruction. I hope to see you on Wednesday, October 30th.
Oak Tours
As we move into October, there may be families new to the area or those who are thinking about school for the 2020-2021 school year. We want to make sure these families know how incredible our wonderful Oak community is for their children. If you know someone who might be interested in a tour of Oak School, please contact kattell@lasdschools.org
Halloween- Thursday, October 31
11:30am - Noon Class Parties
12:45pm - Students change into costumes and parents arrive
1:00pm - The parade begins on the blacktop-
Students in Grades 1 - 6 should wear regular clothes on Thursday morning, and bring costumes in their school bags (only Kinders are allowed to come in costume). Students will go to lunch recess, eat and play according to their regular schedule. When the bell rings, students will go to their classes as usual. Each grade will have changing rooms designated for girls and boys.
Costume guidelines: Age-appropriate attire, no violent themes, no excessive blood or gore, no weapons, and no scary masks. Non-scary masks are permitted if vision is not impaired.
Students will walk in a circle around a route on the blacktop. They can walk with students in their grade level, their buddies or even their siblings. We want to make sure students have the opportunity to walk with anyone they would like. Parents are invited to watch and/or take photos from the parent viewing area outside the parade route. Please arrive early, and allow extra time to walk from a potentially distant parking space. When parking, do not block residential driveways.
In case of rain, the parade will be canceled and students can dress up in their costumes for their grade-level and class parties.
STEM Lunch Club
We are looking for parents who might want to assist in the STEM Lunch Club where interested students build and create. Currently, we are hosting the STEM Lunch Club on Thursdays.
Students in Grades 4-6 come to the STEM Lab from 12:00-12:20pm, followed by students in Grades 1-3 from 12:20-12:45pm. If you would like to volunteer during this time as an assistant, please contact Mrs. Attell.
PTA Update
Dear Oak Families -
There’s a lot going on at Oak this month. Read on to stay up to date!
Halloween Fun
Halloween is coming, and I can’t wait to celebrate with the Oak community! We hope to see you this FRIDAY, October 25, at our Spooktacular! Join our 6th grade class hosts for carnival games, haunted house, and raffle.
We will celebrate Halloween again next Thursday, October 31. Class parties will take place from 11:30-12, and our annual Oak Costume Parade will begin at 1:00. We look forward to seeing you there!
Recess Lunch Clubs
We have been working hard to get our recess lunch clubs up and running. Interested kids can spend their lunch recess learning to sew, working in the edible garden, or tinkering in the STEM lab. There’s no need to sign up! Just join in and have fun!
Double your Donation
The PTA appreciates your generous donations to keep our school and programs running. Corporate matching allows you to double (or more) the impact of your donation to Oak. Do you know if your company has a corporate matching program? You can find out through the Double Your Donation widget on the Oak website. Check it out, and help your contribution go even further.
Our Lifesavers this week are....
Terri Sachs for getting our lunch time sewing club going, and continuing our lunching edible garden club.
Alex Schroeder and Kelly Rafferty, or STEM teachers, for getting our kids excited about engineering with the Egg Drop Challenge.
Sincerely,
Sara Payne
Oak PTA President

LAEF Proudly Sponsors Art
Let’s celebrate our amazing art program! Unique to LASD, the Art Docent program teaches each TK-6th-grade student to explore art through appreciation and participation. Over 85 art lessons are taught in every elementary school classroom 4-9 times a year. Find out what your child’s been learning in art this year.
STEM Career Days
Interested in igniting young minds? We are looking for volunteers to help us plan the 4th Annual STEM Career Days at Egan and Blach. STEM careers incorporate and extend beyond just science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The intent of this day is to give our 7th and 8th-grade students an opportunity to learn about the different professions within the STEM field. This school year, the event will be held on Feb 3 & 4.
If you would like to get involved, please email LASD STEM Coordinator Karen Wilson or Anjana Nagarajan-Butaney.
Help Us Reach Our Goal
If you have yet to make your annual donation to LAEF, Donate or Pledge today and help fund teachers at your neighborhood school this school year. The suggested donation is $1,200 per student or $120/month per student. Every donation of any amount is appreciated.
