Superintendent Letter from Dr. Grunewald
Please read the letter emailed to you from Dr. Grunewald about increased safety procedures at school events. At Santa Fe, our students will receive information this week concerning these new safety measures so that they will be ready to fully participate in our school events.
Practice Respect (Others, Property)
During September, we are going to highlight our core behavior of Practice Respect by encouraging students, faculty/staff, and other school stakeholders to consistently demonstrate respect for others and respect for property. Social Media, person-to-person conversations, classroom interactions, and group settings are all opportunities to practice respect for others. Caring for our campus facilities during school and at school events shows respect for property. Faculty/Staff will be looking for positive choices by our students in these areas throughout September and continuing for the rest of the school year. Together, we can make a positive difference by respecting others and respecting property.
School IDs
We are very proud of our students for wearing their student IDs each day. Last week, when we started having a daily School ID check, we had 56 students without IDs on Day One, 37 students without IDs on Day Two, and 31 students without IDs on Day Three. To have 98-99% of our students participating by wearing IDs helps to create a positive and safe environment for our school. For students without IDs, we have a Temporary ID checkout process that we follow each day at school.
We use IDs for three reasons to help our school climate/culture.
- Safety (We need to know who is supposed to be on campus property.)
- Accountability (Individuals wearing School IDs are less likely to make poor behavior decisions in common areas.)
- Efficiency (School IDs are used in multiple ways each day at school to help students.)
It is an expectation that students have their IDs visible and accessible at school each day. Students without School IDs may be required to purchase a new ID for $5 starting on the fourth checkout of a Temporary ID and each time thereafter. Thank you for helping us make School IDs a useful tool for our educational environment.
Advisory
Starting September 12, we will be on the Advisory Schedule every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after 2nd Hour. We use Advisory to offer academic help to students and also to create time in the school day for school groups and activities to meet. Students making a D or F will automatically be assigned to Advisory by teachers. Students and Parents may also request for a student to be placed in Advisory. It is a great time to make up an assignment, to make up a quiz, or to check with a teacher about a missed classroom lesson due to absence. The New Advisory List will go out each Friday for the next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. 2nd Hour Teachers will release only students on the list on Advisory Days. Please contact your teacher if you wish to be placed on the Advisory List each week. There is also a tab for school groups and activities to list their students participating in a meeting. Please note that academic help takes priority over a group meeting, so a student making a D or F should report for academic help.
On an Advisory Day, the bell will ring at 10:05 am for students on the Advisory List to go to their assigned Advisory Location by 10:10 am. From 10:10-10:30 am, the student will remain in the assigned Advisory Location. Students not on the Advisory List will remain in 2nd Hour and have 20 minutes to quietly study. For students with lots of after school activities or a part-time job, this 60 minutes (20 minutes three days each week) of study time is a welcome block of time to work on homework, to read something assigned or just for fun, or to study for a test.
Principals will track students who are making a D or F and do not show up for Advisory as required. Holding students accountable is not disciplinary, but rather intended as ensuring that academic help takes place during the school day.
