Austin ISD Mindfulness Newsletter
January 2021 -- #mindfulAISD
Here for Y'all
Welcome back y'all. I hope your break was restorative. I know these are trying times and I can say personally that mindfulness is needed now more than ever. I appreciate your patience as it's been a couple months since I've sent a newsletter and new "Today's Mindful Moment" videos were put on pause. I tried to continue newsletters and videos over the last 2 months of the semester as I was assigned to different campuses as a substitute, teacher assistant, general school support, but ended up getting sick from the stress and had to push pause so I could best support campuses. And most importantly practice that self-care that I always talk about. I know I'm not alone in experiencing stress last semester. I just wanted to be transparent with y'all about the drop off in updated mindfulness support.
Again, I appreciate your patience and I'm looking forward to supporting staff and students with mindful strategies to help us move through these challenging times with a bit more clarity. This month's newsletter will feature new resources that have been added to our Mindful AISD website.
Please reach out if there's any way I can support y'all further. Continue to find ways to care for yourselves, even in small ways. It really makes a difference.

From the site...Calling all students and teachers! Stressful times like the COVID-19 outbreak are precisely when people need wellness practices the most, and we want to do our part to help out. In response to rising cases and school closures taking place, we have made all of our apps completely free until July 1st, 2021 for all students and teachers (K-12 and college) so that they can have access to wellness at home through the end of the semester.
Yoga w/ Adriene: Breath--A 30 Day Yoga Journey (found on the 'Practices' page)
Austin's own Adriene is back with her newest 30 Day Yoga Journey, Breath. She does this at the start of every year. It's entirely FREE and for ALL levels. More from Adriene...
A daily practice can be one of the strongest guiding forces that lead us toward healing and growth on our journey. It can serve as a real tangible pathway toward optimal physical, mental, and emotional health. A road back to our true self, it can serve as a way to release anxiety and feel confident in our bodies. With focus on awareness of breath, this program invites a ripple effect of benefits ranging from boosting immune function to removing emotional blockages.
iRest Yoga Nidra (found on the 'Practices-Calming' page)
This link has a few introductory iRest practices. When I was receiving my yoga certification, the times when we got to practice iRest as a class were some of our favorite times because it's so relaxing and restorative. From the iRest site...iRest is typically taught as a guided meditation. To try iRest, you don't need to do anything complicated. Just find a comfortable place, either seated or lying down. You can follow the recording with your eyes open or gently closed—whatever feels best for you. Please feel free to try it out and learn to experience a feeling of calm amidst the ever-changing circumstances of life.
Mental Health Resource Toolkit (found on the 'Teachers & Staff' page)
This amazing toolkit from the AISD Benefits and Wellness Department has a ton of valuable resources. The "Support Aids" page includes Support for Grief in the Workplace, AISD Suicide Prevention Toolkit, Self-Care for Educators, a Managing Worry & Anxiety webinar and more. Shout out to Stephanie Hawkins for doing so much for AISD staff wellness.
PK-12 Digital Resources from the Blanton Museum of Art (found on the 'Teachers & Staff' & 'Families' page)
The amazing Blanton Museum of Art has put together some high-quality resources for SEL, Art-Making, Social Justice, STEAM, and Early Literacy. From the site...During the temporary pause in the Blanton Museum of Art’s gallery teaching program, the education team has designed a robust program of digital content, outlined below. Each lesson will feature works of art from the museum’s permanent collection. All lessons are designed both for asynchronous learning and to stimulate classroom conversation; many lessons can be broken down into smaller units for greater flexibility.
