Silver Lake Intermediate December 1, 2023
SLI Families:
I hope everyone in our SLI family community is staying healthy and doing well.
Next week, we look forward to our 5th & 6th grade music concert on Dec. 7 @ 6:00 pm for 5th grade and @7:15 pm for 6th grade. It would be a great time to stop and pick up a Papa Murphy's pizza and mention Silver Lake for a percentage of the proceeds to go to our school.
Speaking of raising funds for our school... thank you to those who donated to our UnFundraiser this week. We are up from $1,742 to $2,360 (an increase of $618).
As we feel the colder temperatures this week, just a reminder we do go outside for recess with temperatures/wind chill 10 degrees and above.
Before we go on Winter Break, please check the lost and found as items will be donated AND if you want to purchase a yearbook you need to do so before break. Information is in this newsletter.
Have a great weekend.
Mrs. Jill Marr

7th Grade ELA Discussion
7th grade ELA students are in the middle of an 'Adolescence' unit. Students were given the task to plan for a Fishbowl-style discussion. Their question to discuss was, "How does adolescence change people?"
Brainiacs
7th graders have been working on their Adolescence unit in Language Arts classes. As an extension, students during SOAR time learned about the parts of the brain and their functions. Students were even able to make a “brain hemisphere” hat to wear proudly through the hallways.
Giving Back to the Troops
Students in Mr. Retzer's classes decorated boxes with care for the care packages that will be sent to the Oconomowoc VFW and forwarded to servicemen and women who won't be able to be home with their families for Christmas. Packages are being sent to Poland, Kuwait, and on ships in the Pacific Ocean and the Red Sea.

Illness
Cold and flu season is upon us and general illness, Influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 continue to be reported as widespread across the United States. While we know that illnesses are common at this time of year, I am reaching out to remind everyone of our health practices at school and our illness guidelines to keep our students, staff, and schools as healthy as possible during this time of year.
Health Practices at School:
- Our school will continue to be cleaned and sanitized daily and nightly, with high-touch surfaces receiving additional cleaning throughout the day.
- Staff will continue to encourage good hand hygiene routines throughout the day.
- Students who are feeling unwell will be given a pass to go to the health room for evaluation and parents will be contacted when a child needs to be sent home.
Illness Guideline Reminders:
- We strongly encourage you to monitor your child’s health continually. It is important to be mindful of any illness symptoms that your child may have BEFORE sending them to school.
- Please keep your child home from school if they are ill.
- If your child is staying home due to illness, please contact our attendance line to report the absence and illness symptoms. 262-560-4302
- If your child experiences fever, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea as their only symptoms, they may return to school 24-hours after the symptom has resolved.
- If your child experiences multiple symptoms or symptoms that could indicate COVID-19, please refer to our OASD Illness Guidelines. OASD Illness Guidelines
Thank you for your partnership to keep our school healthy.

Parents of students 16 and younger seeking a work permit, will now log on to the Department of Workforce Developments page and use their permit application tool. Here is the link: Work Permit.
This new system will allow you to apply for a permit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from any computer, tablet or smartphone. You will make your payment through the system as well. The department will mail a paper copy of the permit directly to your child's employer.

Student Services News & Supports
For many people, the winter months mean fun parties, festive food, and lots of extra time with family. However, the joys of the holiday season can also bring a lot of stress. If you are starting to feel anxious about the holidays, you are not alone. So how do you manage it? Here are 5 tips to survive and thrive during the holidays.
1. Breathe.
When we are anxious, we tend to take shallow or rapid breaths. This tells our sympathetic nervous system to be on alert, and activates our body so it’s ready to take action. This can make stress feel worse. However, we can use deep breathing to reverse this response and tap into our ability to relax.
It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Try a simple 4-8 breath: Inhale for a count of 4 and exhale for a count of 8. When you lengthen the exhalation, you allow your body to release tension. Just be sure to breathe through your belly (think of inflating it like a balloon) rather than your chest. Deep, slow belly breathing has a calming effect. It’s a quick and easy way to ease holiday stress.
2. Choose.
Instead of saying yes to every single holiday activity, prioritize the ones that are most important to you – and schedule down time for yourself. Although you may be expected to go to some family activities, you can talk to your parents or caregivers about giving you some freedom too. This will enable you to truly enjoy the things that are important to you while giving you space to take time for yourself.
3. Move your body.
Exercise is a well-known mood booster, and can help when you’re feeling anxious or stressed out. Try to build a little exercise into every day. This can mean taking a walk with a friend, shooting a few hoops, or putting on your favorite song for a family dance party. Need a quick exercise fix? Do 20 jumping jacks and then run in place super-fast – this has the added benefit of feeling silly, so you may just laugh out loud!
4. Connect.
For many people, the holidays are packed with family time. You may find yourself feeling disconnected from your friends. Plan ahead to see your friends over the winter break. If you can’t connect in person, schedule a video call instead. Taking breaks from family time to see your friends will keep you feeling connected and help you avoid feelings of family overload.
5. Practice gratitude.
Research suggests that people who practice gratitude tend to feel happier and more fulfilled. Each morning, pick 3 things that you are grateful for, and spend some time reflecting on how these things (or people) improve your life. Focusing on the things you are truly grateful for can be centering and uplifting.
The holidays can be the most wonderful and the most stressful time of year. And yes, it’s ok to feel both! Use these tips to stay grounded so that you can get the most out of your holiday time, your vacation time, and your family time.

We Need More Substitutes!
Our school needs more short-term substitute teachers, paraprofessionals, and custodians - can you help?
As a short-term sub, you have the flexibility to choose which school you would like to work at, and what schedule works best for you. Use this online form for a fast and easy application process if you’re interested in joining the OASD as a short-term substitute.
Long-term substitute teacher, paraprofessional, and custodian positions are also available at all of our OASD schools. You can apply online through WECAN for a long-term position by creating an account, then searching for Oconomowoc Area School District in the support staff section.
Please consider working for the OASD and making a positive impact on our school and students!
