Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,

We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all the families who joined us for Back to School Night. Your presence made the evening truly special and a resounding success. It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic parents and guardians engaging with the teachers and staff, getting a glimpse into your child's learning environment, forging connections with members of our school community and celebrating the many achievements of the school. Your active involvement is invaluable in creating a positive and supportive educational experience for our students.

DCPS Back to School Block Party (9/23)

Join DC Public Schools on Saturday, September 23, 11:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m., at McKinley Tech High School to celebrate the new school year with free food, resources, and fun activities for all ages, including a moon bounce, face painting, and student performances Flu shots, COVID-19 boosters, and routine childhood immunizations will be available at a mobile vaccine clinic. RSVP for the block party and register for the vaccine clinic here.

We had a wonderful time connecting with families at Back to School Night! As we work to improve on our practices each and every year, we would love to hear what you would like us to continue doing to make future family engagement events a success! The feedback provided last year was referenced when planning this year's events and has been hugely helpful.

During Back to School Night, we shared additional 2023 PARCC data, outlining the growth and achievement of Hyde-Addison ES, compared to DCPS, PCS and all students who tested in Washington, DC. That graphic is below.

Shout out to Ms. Gupta's homeroom who had zero absences over the past week of school!

Looking for ways to get involved and volunteer at Hyde-Addison? The H-A Kiss and Ride Line is looking for parent volunteers. Each month we'll call on parents of a different grade level to come out and help us on O street each morning from 8:10-8:30am. For the month of September were looking for 5th grade parents, followed by 4th grade in October and so on. If you're interested in joining us, please reach out to Ms. Zaid amina.zaid@k12.dc.gov or catch us in the Kiss and Ride Line and we'll give you all the details. Always remember, don't park in the kiss and ride line.

The Hyde-Addison playground is NOT available for student use after school dismissal because it is reserved for the Champions after-school program. For safety reasons, adults and children not associated with Champions may not also utilize the space. Fortunately, Volta Park is only two blocks away if you all are looking for a fun playdate location and Rose Park is only 6 blocks away.

School ends at 3:25pm and students are late being picked up after 3:30pm. We ask families to hold off on asking teachers questions or delving into conversations at dismissal time, as they need to ensure the students remaining are picked up safely. To that end, please allow classes the time to get to their line spots and be seated before encouraging your child to leave with you.

Please be reminded that early dismissal ends at 2:50pm.

Each year, a family handbook is provided to share guidelines and information with families. Please find the SY2023-24 family handbook below, which specifically outlines arrival and dismissal procedures, which may be helpful as the first day of school approaches!

Per DCPS, all students in grades Kindergarten through 5 must have a signed permission form on file in order to walk or take public transportation home alone or with a sibling, for each applicable school year. No student will be allowed to leave school alone or with a sibling until the attached form has been signed and returned to the main office or emailed to hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov.

If you already filled out the form for a Kids Ride Free card, check your child's backpack because it was sent home in a sealed envelope however we needed to request additional cards due to the volume of requests. If you haven't received yours yet, we will send it home as soon as we receive the additional cards. If you would like a Kids Ride Free Card for your student, please fill out this short form.

Thanks to all who supported our first Restaurant night of the year. We loved seeing so many families before and after Back to School Night. We'll report on the total amount raised in the coming weeks. If you have suggestions for a restaurant in your neighborhood that might be interested in partnering, please let us know!

Thanks to everyone who has already participated in this year's Great Envelope Race, the PTA's biggest fundraiser of the year. To date we've raised $3,595 toward our goal of $50,000 by October 31, 2023.

As a reminder, the suggested contribution is $400 per student, however, all donations are greatly appreciated! NEW this year - all donors at the suggested donation amount will receive a car magnet featuring our newly designed rainbow Hyde Hurricane with our five core values!

Here’s how it works:

• Pick up a blue envelope in the main office and return it to your teacher or the main office with whatever amount you choose enclosed.
• Or make your donation online, either one-time at www.hydegift.com or recurring at www.hydemonthlygift.com.
• Ask family members like grandparents and neighbors to participate too! All donations are appreciated!

Thank you for helping us bridge the gap between the school's operating budget and the funds provided by DCPS!

Ms. Zaid, Hyde's very own art teacher extraordinaire, is planning a number of activities during Art All Night in Georgetown on Friday, September 29 and she could use help before, during, and after the event. Attendance is a priority of DCPS and Hyde-Addison, as we know regular school attendance is integral to student success. Please find the DCPS calendar, linked here and shown below, so that your family can plan events and vacations accordingly.
